This review systematically compares the size‐dependent toxicity of microplastics and nanoplastics in the intestine, liver, kidney, lung, and brain. Particle size determines bioavailability, barrier penetration, and injury mechanisms. Because of their small size and high surface reactivity, NPs readily cross the intestinal epithelium and blood–brain ...

Biomarkers intersect with the exposome [PDF]
The exposome concept promotes use of omic tools for discovering biomarkers of exposure and biomarkers of disease in studies of diseased and healthy populations. A two-stage scheme is presented for profiling omic features in serum to discover molecular biomarkers and then for applying these biomarkers in follow-up studies.

Young children (0–9 years) and residents of urban areas appeared particularly vulnerable to respiratory allergy development and exacerbation. Incidence showed nonlinear associations with PM10, PM2.5, temperature, and alder/birch pollen, while DPMR showed similar patterns, except for NO2 and the interaction O3*NO2.

The Alzheimer's Disease Exposome
AbstractIntroductionEnvironmental factors are poorly understood in the etiology of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementias. The importance of environmental factors in gene environment interactions (GxE) is suggested by wide individual differences in cognitive loss, even for carriers of AD‐risk genetic variants. Results and DiscussionWe propose ...

The Exposome: Molecules to Populations
Derived from the term exposure, the exposome is an omic-scale characterization of the nongenetic drivers of health and disease. With the genome, it defines the phenome of an individual. The measurement of complex environmental factors that exert pressure on our health has not kept pace with genomics and historically has not provided a similar level of ...

Abstract INTRODUCTION The exposome encompasses all environmental exposures across the life course, yet educational environments, a critical socioenvironmental exposure, remain underexplored despite their role in cognitive aging and Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (AD/ADRD).
