How Video‐Based Information Affects Farmers' Willingness to Pay for Drone Services

open access: yesApplied Economic Perspectives and Policy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Professional service for digital technology like agricultural drones lowers transaction costs and scope thresholds for smallholders. Meanwhile, perceptual adoption barriers remain underexplored. We conduct a two‐stage choice experiment with a randomized video‐based information treatment among 384 Chinese crop farmers to measure its effect on ...

Hemp Cultivation and Crop Diversification: Implications for Ecosystem Services in Kentucky

open access: yesApplied Economic Perspectives and Policy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study examines the ecosystem benefits of expanding hemp cultivation by assessing its impact on crop diversity. Using scenario‐based simulations and fixed‐effect panel regressions with county‐level data in Kentucky, we find that increased hemp acreage tends to enhance crop diversity, improving water quality and bird diversity.

Temporary Programs, Lasting Questions: Ad Hoc Assistance in the U.S. Farm Safety Net

open access: yesApplied Economic Perspectives and Policy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Large ad hoc assistance programs have returned to U.S. farm policy since 2017, operating alongside a more developed safety net built around federally subsidized crop insurance, Title I commodity programs, and standing disaster assistance. This paper reviews the renewed use of ad hoc assistance, documents its recent scale using USDA data, and ...

Plant-microbial interactions in agriculture and the use of farming systems to improve diversity and productivity

open access: yesAIMS Microbiology, 2017
A thorough understanding of the services provided by microorganisms to the agricultural ecosystem is integral to understanding how management systems can improve or deteriorate soil health and production over the long term. Yet it is hampered by the difficulty in measuring the intersection of plant, microbe, and environment, in no small part because of
