Making fish oils in plants: from alpha to omega

open access: yesNew Phytologist, EarlyView.
Schematic representation of the biosynthetic pathway for the synthesis of omega‐3 long‐chain polyunsaturated fatty acids. The sequential transgene‐encoded activities required to convert endogenous fatty acids to the longer chain polyunsaturated forms of eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid are shown in red.

Systems‐Level Plant Responses Reveal Pseudomonas‐Mediated Growth Promotion in Brachypodium Under Nitrogen Limitation

open access: yesPlant, Cell &Environment, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Plant growth–promoting bacteria can enhance plant performance under nutrient limitation, yet the underlying plant molecular responses remain incompletely resolved. We investigated growth promotion by Pseudomonas koreensis in Brachypodium distachyon under contrasting nitrogen (N) regimes using time‐resolved phenotyping, elemental analysis ...

Elovl4 and Fa2h expression during rat spermatogenesis: a link to the very-long-chain PUFAs typical of germ cell sphingolipids[S]

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 2018
The sphingolipids (SLs) of rodent spermatogenic cells (spermatocytes, spermatids) and spermatozoa contain nonhydroxylated and 2-hydroxylated versions of very-long-chain (C26–C32) PUFAs (n-V and h-V, respectively) not present in Sertoli cells (SCs). Here,

Understanding of Molecular Mechanisms and Breeding Strategies for Enhancing Oleic Acid Biosynthesis in Oil Crops

open access: yesFood Frontiers, Volume 7, Issue 4, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Oleic acid (C18:1), a monounsaturated fatty acid, is a key determinant of nutritional value and oxidative stability of vegetable oils. Increasing its concentration has therefore become a central objective in oilseed crop improvement. This review summarizes current knowledge on the molecular mechanisms and breeding strategies underlying oleic ...

Juniperonic Acid Biosynthesis is Essential in Caenorhabditis elegans Lacking Δ6 Desaturase (fat-3) and Generates New ω-3 Endocannabinoids

open access: yesCells, 2020
In eukaryotes, the C20:4 polyunsaturated fatty acid arachidonic acid (AA) plays important roles as a phospholipid component, signaling molecule and precursor of the endocannabinoid-prostanoid axis.

Transcriptomic Analysis in the Liver of Two Rabbit Lines Divergently Selected for Intramuscular Fat Content

open access: yesAnimal Genetics, Volume 57, Issue 3, June 2026.
ABSTRACT The intramuscular fat (IMF) content is an important indicator of meat quality, affecting the sensory properties of meat. IMF is a complex trait with polygenic nature. This research aimed to identify differentially expressed (DE) genes and key transcription factors (TFs) associated with IMF deposition in the liver of two rabbit lines ...

Performance of an S‐metolachlor capsule suspension for barnyardgrass control and crop tolerance in fenclorim‐treated rice

open access: yesAgrosystems, Geosciences &Environment, Volume 9, Issue 2, June 2026.
Abstract Barnyardgrass [Echinochloa crus‐galli (L.) P. Beauv.] is the most problematic weed of delayed‐flooded rice (Oryza sativa L.) systems in the mid‐southern United States. Recent findings suggest that acetochlor can achieve effective barnyardgrass control in rice, but rice injury can occur with rainfall soon after application.

Prediction of cognitive outcome and progression to dementia using ω6‐PUFA/ω3‐PUFA ratio

open access: yesAlzheimer's &Dementia, Volume 22, Issue 6, June 2026.
Abstract INTRODUCTION The polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) omega‐6 (ω6) and omega‐3 (ω3) are linked to cognitive performance and Alzheimer's‐type dementia (DAT), but ω3‐PUFA supplementation offers limited benefits. We propose that the ω6‐PUFA/ω3‐PUFA ratio better explains cognitive decline and DAT risk.

Combinatorial Effects of Fatty Acid Elongase Enzymes on Nervonic Acid Production in Camelina sativa

open access: yesPLOS ONE, 2015
Very long chain fatty acids (VLCFAs) with chain lengths of 20 carbons and longer provide feedstocks for various applications; therefore, improvement of VLCFA contents in seeds has become an important goal for oilseed enhancement. VLCFA biosynthesis is controlled by a multi-enzyme protein complex referred to as fatty acid elongase, which is composed of ...
