The role of iron in normal and impaired testicular function

open access: yesAndrology, EarlyView.
Abstract Iron plays a critical role in testicular physiology, impacting spermatogenesis, testosterone production, and overall testicular function. Iron homeostasis is maintained through systemic and cellular regulatory mechanisms, including hepcidin‐mediated systemic iron control and the iron‐responsive element/iron regulatory protein (IRE/IRP) system ...

Roles of vitamin A in the regulation of fatty acid synthesis

open access: yesWorld Journal of Clinical Cases, 2021
Dietary macronutrients and micronutrients play important roles in human health. On the other hand, the excessive energy derived from food is stored in the form of triacylglycerol.

The malate–aspartate shuttle supports thermogenic lipid mobilization in brown adipocytes

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
Brown fat cells burn lipids within their mitochondria to generate heat. This process involves two energy “shuttles,” one of which is naturally blocked during heat production. We found that the second shuttle (MASh) is not required to generate heat. However, when MASh is disabled, the fatty acids meant for fuel are instead converted back into stored fat.

Associations Among Fatty Acids, Desaturase and Elongase, and Insulin Resistance in Children

open access: yesJournal of the American College of Nutrition, 2017
Fatty acid profiles and desaturase (SCD-16, SCD018, D5D, D6D) and elongase (ELOVL6) enzyme activity have been associated with adiposity and metabolic disease. While this has been studied in adults, few studies have included children. The objective of this study was to evaluate these markers in children and identify relationships with markers of ...

Preimaginal development of Aedes aegypti L. (Diptera: Culicidae) in brackish water gives rise to adult mosquitoes with thicker cuticles and greater insecticide resistance

open access: yesMedical and Veterinary Entomology, EarlyView.
The principal arboviral vector Aedes aegypti can develop in coastal brackish water field habitats (0.5–15 g/L salt) with larvae possessing thicker cuticles and greater resistance to the larvicide Temephos. Females emerging from brackish water‐developing preimaginal stages are now shown to have thicker and remodelled leg and abdominal cuticles and ...

Biosynthesis of Triacylglycerols (TAGs) in plants and algae

open access: yesInternational Journal of Plant Biology, 2011
Triacylglycerols (TAGs), which consist of three fatty acids bound to a glycerol backbone, are major storage lipids that accumulate in developing seeds, flower petals, pollen grains, and fruits of innumerous plant species.

Site‐directed mutagenesis of a fatty acid elongase ELO‐like condensing enzyme [PDF]

open access: yesFEBS Letters, 2013
The condensation step of fatty acid elongation is the addition of a C2 unit from malonyl‐CoA to an acyl primer catalyzed by one of two families of enzymes, the 3‐ketoacyl‐CoA synthases and the ELO‐like condensing enzymes. 3‐Ketoacyl‐CoA synthases use a Claisen‐like reaction mechanism while the mechanism of the ELO‐catalyzed condensation reaction is ...
