Ficolins and the Fibrinogen-like Domain
Ficolins are a group of proteins containing collagen-like and fibrinogen-like (FBG) sequences and they have a similar overall structure to C1q and the collectins. There are two types of ficolin in man: L-ficolin and M-ficolin. L-ficolin is synthesized in the liver and secreted into the plasma.

Graphical abstract illustrating the barrier defense–tolerance framework of reproductive innate immunity. Across the female and male reproductive tracts and the maternal–fetal interface, epithelial barriers, innate sensors, immune cells, and microbial signals are integrated to preserve reproductive homeostasis.

Because of its capacity to increase a physiologic inflammatory response, to stimulate phagocytosis, to promote cell lysis and to enhance pathogen immunogenicity, the complement system is a crucial component of both the innate and adaptive immune ...

Characterization of FIBCD1 as an acetyl group-binding receptor that binds chitin [PDF]
Udgivelsesdato: 2009-Sep-15Chitin is a highly acetylated compound and the second most abundant biopolymer in the world next to cellulose. Vertebrates are exposed to chitin both through food ingestion and when infected with parasites, and fungi and chitin

M-ficolin in children with cancer
M-ficolin (ficolin-1) is a complement-activating pattern-recognition molecule structurally related to mannan-binding lectin. It is produced by monocytes and neutrophils, and is found in serum. Its biological role is largely unknown. We assessed M-ficolin concentration in serum from pediatric cancer patients.

Association of Ficolin-2 Serum Levels and FCN2 Genetic Variants with Indian Visceral Leishmaniasis.
BackgroundVisceral leishmaniasis (VL), one of the neglected tropical diseases, is endemic in the Indian subcontinent. Ficolins are circulating serum proteins of the lectin complement system and involved in innate immunity.MethodsWe have estimated ficolin-

Complement in the homeostatic and ischemic brain [PDF]
The complement system is a component of the immune system involved in both recognition and response to pathogens, and it is implicated in an increasing number of homeostatic and disease processes. It is well documented that reperfusion of ischemic tissue

Ischemia and reperfusion injury in kidney transplantation : relevant mechanisms in injury and repair [PDF]
Ischemia and reperfusion injury (IRI) is a complex pathophysiological phenomenon, inevitable in kidney transplantation and one of the most important mechanisms for non- or delayed function immediately after transplantation.

The Disulfide Bonding Pattern in Ficolin Multimers [PDF]
Ficolin is a plasma lectin, consisting of a short N-terminal multimerization domain, a middle collagen domain, and a C-terminal fibrinogen-like domain. The collagen domains assemble the subunits into trimers, and the N-terminal domain assembles four trimers into 12-mers.

ABSTRACT Background and Aims Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) remains a significant public health burden in low‐ and middle‐income countries, particularly in sub‐Saharan Africa. Although socioeconomic factors contribute to disease persistence, genetic susceptibility plays a critical role in determining progression from Group A Streptococcal infection to ...
