Filaggrin is an intermediate filament-associated protein that is involved in aggregation of keratin filaments in fully cornified cells of the mammalian epidermis, and is an important marker for epidermal differentiation. In this report, the sequence of a rat cDNA clone coding for a portion of the polymeric precursor, profilaggrin, is presented.

BackgroundFilaggrin is a structural protein that has attracted increasing interest over the past decade for its role in the pathogenesis of human atopic dermatitis (AD). Null mutations in its sequence are considered risk factors in the development of AD.Hypothesis/ObjectivesTo investigate canine filaggrin mRNA and protein expression in the skin of ...

Cholesterol sulfate is abundant in the human epidermis and is a putative natural ligand for retinoic acid receptor-related orphan receptor alpha (RORα). Although direct binding of cholesterol sulfate is expected to activate RORα, cholesterol sulfate can also induce RORα expression and increase RORα target gene expression.
