Folate transport in the choroid plexus

Life Sciences, 1975
Abstract The uptake of 5-methyltetrahydrofolic acid (5-MTHF) by the isolated choroid plexus of hog was studied and shown to be both temperature and time dependent. Uptake of 5-MTHF by the isolated choroid plexus was a saturable process and exhibited a K t of 0.9 × 10 −6 M and Vmax of 1.39 nmole/gm dry wt/min.

Membrane Transport of Folates

2003
The chapter reviews the current understanding of the transport mechanisms for folates in mammalian cells--their molecular identities and organization, tissue expression, regulation, structures, and their kinetic and thermodynamic properties. This encompasses a variety of diverse processes.

Renal conservation of folates role of folate transport proteins.

Vitamins and hormones, 2008
Folates play vital roles in one-carbon metabolism that produces the early substrates necessary for nucleotide synthesis and salvage. Folates are essential vitamins in that humans cannot synthesize them and are totally dependent on the diet to obtain them.

Folate Transport by the Choroid Plexus in Vitro

Science, 1975
Reduced folates are transported from blood into cerebrospinal fluid against a concentration gradient. In vitro, folates were transported into and released by isolated rabbit choroid plexuses. The choroid plexus uptake mechanism was specific for folates, energy dependent, and depressed by cold temperatures.

Reduced SP1-mediated transcriptional activation decreases expression of intestinal folate transporters in response to ethanol exposure.

Molecular Nutrition & Food Research, 2015
SCOPE The study was designed to identify the regulatory mechanisms underlying the effects of ethanol exposure on intestinal folate transport and to investigate the reversibility of such effects.

Folate Biosynthesis, Turnover, and Transport in Plants

Annual Review of Plant Biology, 2011
Folates are essential cofactors for one-carbon transfer reactions and are needed in the diets of humans and animals. Because plants are major sources of dietary folate, plant folate biochemistry has long been of interest but progressed slowly until the genome era.

Folate transport in the central nervous system

American Journal of Physiology-Legacy Content, 1975
Methyltetrahydrofolic acid or folic acid was infused intravenously at a constant rate into conscious untreated or methotrexate-pretreated rabbits. After 150 min, at equivalent plasma concentrations, folic acid or methyltetrahydrofolic acid readily entered the cerebrospinal fluid and probably brain by a saturable transport system.

ABC of D's in the folate transporter

Blood, 2010
Consanguinity “loads the dice” for turning up matching pairs when it comes to Mendelian inheritance of autosomal recessive genes. Such is the case in a novel loss-of-function mutation involving PCFT in a female infant with megaloblastic anemia, seizures, and severe growth retardation ...

Transport of folate compounds into Lactobacillus casei

Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, 1974
Abstract Transport of folate, 5-methyl tetrahydrofolate, and amethopterin into Lactobacillus casei occurs against a concentration gradient, is pH and temperature dependent, requires glucose, exhibits saturation kinetics, is maximal when cells are harvested in late-log phase, and is repressed by excess folate in the growth medium.

SLC19: the folate/thiamine transporter family

Pflgers Archiv European Journal of Physiology, 2004
The SLC19 gene family of solute carriers is a family of three transporter proteins with significant structural similarity, transporting, however, substrates with different structure and ionic charge. The three members of this gene family are expressed ubiquitously and mediate the transport of two important water-soluble vitamins, folate and thiamine ...
