Effects of Atmospheric CO2 Levels on the Susceptibility of Maize to Diverse Pathogens
ABSTRACT Rising atmospheric CO2 has significant implications for crop productivity and food security. Based on studies in C3 plants, elevated CO2 (eCO2) can shape plant‐pathogen interactions, although the outcomes are often variable. The question of how eCO2 influences immunity and disease development in C4 plants, such as the globally important cereal

Genome-wide association analysis for fumonisin content in maize kernels
Background Plant breeding has been proposed as one of the most effective and environmentally safe methods to control fungal infection and to reduce fumonisin accumulation. However, conventional breeding can be hampered by the complex genetic architecture

Aflatoxin B1 and total aflatoxins were assessed in 40 commercial maize flour samples collected from Jiroft City, Iran. AFB1 and total aflatoxins were detected in 67.5% and 70% of samples, respectively. A total of 35% of samples exceeded the EU limit for AFB1, while 20% exceeded the EU limit for total aflatoxins.

Unfolding Plant Defence: Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress Signalling at the Plant‐Pathogen Interface
ABSTRACT The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress response, a conserved proteostasis network, has emerged as a central hub that reprograms plant immunity during pathogen attack. This review synthesises how plants harness ER‐stress signalling to mount multilayered defences and how pathogens have evolved counterstrategies to subvert these pathways.

Genomics of Maize Resistance to Fusarium Ear Rot and Fumonisin Contamination
Food contamination with mycotoxins is a worldwide concern, because these toxins produced by several fungal species have detrimental effects on animal and/or human health.

Interactive Effects of Elevated [CO2] and Drought on the Maize Phytochemical Defense Response against Mycotoxigenic Fusarium verticillioides. [PDF]
Changes in climate due to rising atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration ([CO2]) are predicted to intensify episodes of drought, but our understanding of how these combined conditions will influence crop-pathogen interactions is limited.

Co‐Detoxification of Multiple Mycotoxins: Microbial and Enzymatic Biodegradation Processes
The presence of mycotoxins poses a threat to food safety. This article reviews microbial/enzymatic detoxification technologies and the main degradation pathways of key mycotoxins. We propose to overcome current bottlenecks through enzyme engineering and synthetic biology, providing a roadmap for sustainable and scalable solutions.
