Changes in Sucrose, Cyclitols and their Galactosyl Derivatives with Seed Ageing
Current Plant Science and Biotechnology in Agriculture, 1997Soluble carbohydrates have been studied in relation to seed desiccation tolerance and storability. In this study the changes in sucrose, cyclitols and their galactosyl derivatives were related to seed ageing of maize, rice, soyabean, cotton and lettuce. Seeds were aged at 75% relative humidity and 45°C.

Soluble Oligosaccharides and Galactosyl Cyclitols in Maturing Soybean Seeds In Planta and In Vitro
Crop Science, 1998Stachyose, sucrose, and other non‐reducing soluble carbohydrates are associated with the onset of desiccation tolerance during seed development and with seed storability. Mature soybean [Glycine max (L) Merr.l seeds contain several galactosyl cyclitols in addition to sucrose, stachyose, and raffinose, but except for galactinol, the accumulation of ...

CHAPTER 11. Characterization of Sugars, Cyclitols and Galactosyl Cyclitols in Seeds by GC
Food and Nutritional Components in Focus, 2012Soluble carbohydrates are accumulated in seeds during natural seed development and maturation. In addition to being a dietary component of edible seeds, non-reducing water-soluble carbohydrates in seeds are compatible solutes that contribute to the stabilization of membranes, proteins, and intracellular structures during the removal of water associated

The loss of desiccation tolerance of pea and soyabean seedlings and associated changes in their soluble carbohydrates were studied. For the desiccation tolerance test, intact seedlings were dried rapidly at 12% relative humidity, or slowly in a series of decreasing relative humidities, followed by rehydration.

O-alpha-D-Galactopyranosyl-(1-->2)-D-chiro-inositol, herein named fagopyritol B1, was identified as a major soluble carbohydrate (40% of total) in buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench, Polygonaceae) embryos. Analysis of hydrolysis products of purified compounds and of the crude extract led to the conclusion that buckwheat embryos have five alpha ...

Biochemistry and physiology of raffinose family oligosaccharides and galactosyl cyclitols in seeds
Seed Science Research, 2001AbstractRaffinose family oligosaccharides (RFOs) are of almost ubiquitous occurrence in plant seeds. They accumulate during seed development and disappear rapidly during germination. The biosynthesis of raffinose, the first member of the series, proceeds by addition of a galactosyl unit to sucrose.

Oligosaccharides and galactosyl cyclitols in seed desiccation tolerance
Seed Science Research, 1997AbstractSoluble carbohydrates are one of multiple components required for the acquisition of desiccation tolerance during seed development and maturation. Sucrose and the raffinose series of oligosaccharides have been extensively studied in relation to seed desiccation tolerance.
