Human Milk Galectin-3 Binding Protein and Breast-feeding–associated HIV Transmission [PDF]

open access: yesPediatric Infectious Disease Journal, 2013
Analysis of milk from 247 HIV-infected Zambian mothers showed that galectin-3 binding protein concentrations were significantly higher among HIV-infected mothers who transmitted HIV through breast-feeding (6.51 ± 2.12 μg/mL) than among nontransmitters but were also correlated with higher milk and plasma HIV RNA copies/mL and lower CD4+ cell counts. The

Soluble IgE‐binding factors in the serum of food‐allergic patients: Possible pathophysiological role of soluble FcεRI as protective factor

open access: yesClinical and Translational Allergy, 2023
Background IgE‐mediated food allergy is the result of an aberrant immune response involving the interaction of a food allergen with its specific IgE bound to FcɛRI, the high affinity IgE receptor, on mast cells.

Serum galectin-3BP as a novel marker of obesity and metabolic syndrome in Chinese adolescents

open access: yesBMJ Open Diabetes Research & Care, 2021
Introduction Childhood obesity (OB) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) have become a worldwide health problem. Comparative proteomic approaches are widely used in human OB to analyze protein changes in blood plasma. The present study determined the galectin-3

Developing Galectin-3-Targeted Therapeutics in Diseases: Three Distinct Galectin-3 Segments for Targeting

open access: yesExpert Reviews in Molecular Medicine
The β-galactoside-binding protein galectin-3 is currently a hotly pursued therapeutic target in cancer, inflammation and fibrosis-associated diseases due to its multi-mode actions and broad impact on the pathogenesis and progress of the diseases. Various

A major secretory defect of tumour-infiltrating T lymphocytes due to galectin impairing LFA-1-mediated synapse completion

open access: yesNature Communications, 2016
Galectin-3 is a sugar-binding protein that can inhibit antitumour cytotoxic immunity. Here the authors show that Galectin-3 expressed by tumour cells inhibits LFA-1 on cytotoxic lymphocytes, impairing immunological synapse formation, IFNg secretion, and ...

Evaluation of galectin-3 and other biochemical parameters in chronic kidney disease patients on hemodialysis in Erbil city

open access: yesZanco Journal of Medical Sciences, 2023
Background and objective: Chronic kidney disease represents a leading cause of death in many countries. End-stage renal disease is the final stage of chronic kidney disease, in which the kidneys are no longer function well enough for the patient to live ...

Galectin-3 silencing inhibits epirubicin-induced ATP binding cassette transporters and activates the mitochondrial apoptosis pathway via β-catenin/GSK-3β modulation in colorectal carcinoma.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
Multidrug resistance (MDR), an unfavorable factor compromising the treatment efficacy of anticancer drugs, involves the upregulation of ATP binding cassette (ABC) transporters and induction of galectin-3 signaling. Galectin-3 plays an anti-apoptotic role

Organizing the interface—Plasma membrane architecture and receptor dynamics in virus‐cell interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Plasma membranes contain dynamic nanoscale domains that organize lipids and receptors. Because viruses operate at similar scales, this architecture shapes early infection steps, including attachment, receptor engagement, and entry. Using influenza A virus and HIV‐1 as examples, we highlight how receptor nanoclusters, multivalent glycan interactions ...

Malectin Alleviates Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress in Gestational Diabetes Mellitus via Glycoprotein Quality Control Mechanisms

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Malectin alleviates high glucose‐induced ER stress and damage in placental trophoblasts, a function dependent on its six critical carbohydrate‐binding residues. In a GDM mouse model, administration of TAT‐Malectin ameliorated hyperglycemia and placental ER stress and prevented fetal macrosomia.
