Towards Integrated Surveillance of Marine Brucellosis: Diagnostic and Phylogenetic Assessment of Brucella ceti in Stranded Dolphins of the Western Mediterranean Sea

open access: yesTransboundary and Emerging Diseases, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Reports of brucellosis in free‐ranging cetaceans are increasing worldwide, particularly in the Mediterranean Sea. To enhance diagnostic accuracy and epidemiological understanding of cetacean brucellosis in the Western Mediterranean Sea, we analyzed bacteriological, serological, and molecular data from 30 cetaceans belonging to three different species ...

Post-Exposure Vaccination Improves Gammaherpesvirus Neutralization

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2007
Herpesvirus carriers transmit infection despite making virus-specific antibodies. Thus, their antibody responses are not necessarily optimal. An important question for infection control is whether vaccinating carriers might improve virus neutralization.

Humanized Mouse Models of Epstein Barr Virus Infection

open access: yesCurrent Protocols, Volume 5, Issue 11, November 2025.
Abstract The oncogenic Epstein Barr virus (EBV) is an exclusively human pathogen with related lymphocryptoviruses (γ1‐herpesviruses) only present in monkeys. Therefore, experimentation with EBV infection in a small animal model requires reconstitution or adoptive transfer of human lymphocyte populations, primarily EBV's main host cell, the human B cell.

A novel role of SIRT1 in gammaherpesvirus latency and replication [PDF]

open access: yesCell Cycle, 2014
Viruses often hijack cellular functions to facilitate their infection and replication. SIRT1, one of the most widely studied sirtuins, functions as both metabolic sensor and transcriptional regulator. SIRT1 has broad cellular functions including metabolic homeostasis, stress response, tumorigenesis and autophagy.

Prevention of Tumor Formation by Latent Gammaherpesvirus Infection

open access: yesPLOS ONE, 2015
Recent reports suggested that chronic herpesvirus infection, as a constituent of the so-called virome, may not only exert harmful effects but may also be beneficial to the host, for example mediating increased resistance to secondary infections or to tumors.

Pixelated pathologies: Camera trapping as a tool for monitoring wildlife health

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 62, Issue 11, Page 2894-2913, November 2025.
Given the increasing emergence of diseases, some with conservation and public health implications, improving and expanding wildlife health surveillance strategies is imperative. Camera trapping is particularly relevant for detecting new outbreaks, monitoring high‐risk zones and evaluating risk mitigation measures. Abstract Camera trapping has become an

Detection of a Novel Gammaherpesvirus in Koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus) [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Wildlife Diseases, 2011
A novel gammaherpesvirus was detected in wild koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus) captured at different locations during 2010. Sequence analysis of the DNA polymerase gene revealed that the virus was genetically distinct from all known gammaherpesviruses. This is the first herpesvirus to be definitively identified in the Vombatiforme suborder (koalas and ...

Identification of Proteins Associated with Murine Gammaherpesvirus 68 Virions

open access: yes, 2003
Murine gammaherpesvirus 68 (MHV68 [also known as γHV-68]) is distinguished by its ability to replicate to high titers in cultured cells, making it an excellent candidate for studying gammaherpesvirus virion composition.

Tertiary Lymphoid Organs at the Center Stage of Skin's Humoral Immunity

open access: yesImmunological Reviews, Volume 334, Issue 1, September 2025.
ABSTRACT The skin is the outermost organ that serves as the host's live, microbiota‐inhabited physical border, evolved to cope with continuous confrontation by a wide variety of environmental elements. This dynamic borderline is prone to injury and damage.

Novel Cereblon‐Binding Immunomodulators Have Increased Potency Against Gammaherpesvirus‐ Associated Lymphomas In Vitro

open access: yesJournal of Medical Virology, Volume 97, Issue 8, August 2025.
ABSTRACT Primary effusion lymphoma (PEL), which is caused by Kaposi sarcoma herpesvirus (KSHV), and Burkitt lymphoma (BL), a subset of which are associated with Epstein‐Barr virus (EBV), are aggressive non‐Hodgkin's lymphomas. Both have relatively poor survival compared to other lymphomas. Cereblon‐binding immunomodulators (CBIs), such as pomalidomide (
