Restriction mapping of the genome of the protozoan parasite Theileria parva. [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 1992
We have used a modified linking clone strategy and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis to derive a map of the 29 Sfi I and 4 Not I sites in the 10 million base pair genome of the protozoan parasite Theileria parva. This was achieved in the absence of classical genetic information. The map reveals four chromosomes.

ProtozoaDB: dynamic visualization and exploration of protozoan genomes [PDF]

open access: yesNucleic Acids Research, 2007
ProtozoaDB (http://www.biowebdb.org/protozoadb) is being developed to initially host both genomics and post-genomics data from Plasmodium falciparum, Entamoeba histolytica, Trypanosoma brucei, T. cruzi and Leishmania major, but will hopefully host other protozoan species as more genomes are sequenced.

piRNA pathway evolution beyond gonad context: Perspectives from apicomplexa and trypanosomatids

open access: yesFrontiers in Genetics, 2023
piRNAs function as genome defense mechanisms against transposable elements insertions within germ line cells. Recent studies have unraveled that piRNA pathways are not limited to germ cells as initially reckoned, but are instead also found in non-gonadal

Characterization of adenine phosphoribosyltransferase (APRT) activity in Trypanosoma brucei brucei: Only one of the two isoforms is kinetically active.

open access: yesPLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases, 2022
Human African Trypanosomiasis (HAT), also known as sleeping sickness, is a Neglected Tropical Disease endemic to 36 African countries, with approximately 70 million people currently at risk for infection.

Metagenomic analysis reveals the relationship between intestinal protozoan parasites and the intestinal microecological balance in calves

open access: yesParasites & Vectors, 2023
Background A close connection between a protozoan parasite and the balance of the other gut microbes of the host has been demonstrated. The calves may be naturally co-infected with many parasites, and the co-effects of parasites on other intestinal ...

Genome-wide and targeted CRISPR screens identify RNF213 as a mediator of interferon gamma–dependent pathogen restriction in human cells

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, 2023
Significance Interferons provide protection against pathogens by inducing the expression of genes encoding defense proteins that often directly target invading pathogens.

CysQ of , a Protozoa, May Have Been Acquired from Bacteria by Horizontal Gene Transfer [PDF]

open access: yesGenomics & Informatics, 2012
Horizontal gene transfer (HGT) is the movement of genetic material between kingdoms and is considered to play a positive role in adaptation. Cryptosporidium parvum is a parasitic protozoan that causes an infectious disease. Its genome sequencing reported

Near-chromosome level genome assembly reveals ploidy diversity and plasticity in the intestinal protozoan parasite Entamoeba histolytica

open access: yesBMC Genomics, 2020
Background Amoebozoa is a eukaryotic supergroup composed of unicellular and multicellular amoebic protozoa (e.g. Acanthamoeba , Dictyostelium , and Entamoeba ).

Systems analysis of host-parasite interactions. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Parasitic diseases caused by protozoan pathogens lead to hundreds of thousands of deaths per year in addition to substantial suffering and socioeconomic decline for millions of people worldwide.

Are protozoan metacaspases potential parasite killers?

open access: yesParasites & Vectors, 2011
Mechanisms concerning life or death decisions in protozoan parasites are still imperfectly understood. Comparison with higher eukaryotes has led to the hypothesis that caspase-like enzymes could be involved in death pathways.
