Tonically Balancing Intracortical Excitation and Inhibition by GABAergic Gliotransmission

Neural Computation, 2014
For sensory cortices to respond reliably to feature stimuli, the balancing of neuronal excitation and inhibition is crucial. A typical example might be the balancing of phasic excitation within cell assemblies and phasic inhibition between cell assemblies. The former controls the gain of and the latter the tuning of neuronal responses.

Microglia modulate gliotransmission through the regulation of VAMP2 proteins in astrocytes

Glia, 2020
AbstractVesicular release is one of the release mechanisms of various signaling molecules. In neurons, the molecular machinery involved in vesicular release has been designed through evolution to trigger fast and synchronous release of neurotransmitters.

Altered synapses and gliotransmission in Alzheimer's disease and AD model mice

Neurobiology of Aging, 2013
Amyloid-β (Aβ) plaque accumulation in Alzheimer's disease (AD) is associated with glutamatergic synapse loss, but less is known about its effect on inhibitory synapses. Here, we demonstrate that vesicular γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) transporter (VGAT) presynaptic bouton density is unaffected in human preclinical and end-stage AD and in APP/PS1 ...

Gliotransmission at central glutamatergic synapses: d-serine on stage

Journal of Physiology-Paris, 2006
Long ignored and only considered as housekeeping cells for neurons, astroglial cells in the last decade have gained increasing attention as key players of higher functions in healthy brain, but also in diseases. This revolution in our way to think the active brain culminates in the concept of a tripartite synapse, which considers glial cells and ...

Enhancement of Neuronal Activity by Receptor-Mediated Gliotransmission

2017
Transporters, embedded in glial plasma membranes, can regulate ambient GABA levels. We proposed here a neural network model with a GABAergic gliotransmission mechanism, and simulated the model to investigate how the type of GABA receptors on glia affects neuronal information processing. Although the synaptic interneuron-glia signaling via Open image in

Prostaglandin E2, Gliotransmission and the Onset of Puberty

2014
Over the past four decades it has become clear that prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), a phospholipid-derived signaling molecule, plays a fundamental role in modulating the gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) neuroendocrine system and in shaping the hypothalamus.

Optogenetic modulates gliotransmission
