Proliferative and protective effects of the GH/IGF-I axis on cardiomyocytes and neural progenitor cells [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Cardiovascular disease is the most common cause of mortality in the Western world and the majority of cardiovascular deaths are caused by coronary artery disease or cerebrovascular disease.

Somatopause, weaknesses of the therapeutic approaches and the cautious optimism based on experimental ageing studies with soy isoflavones [PDF]

open access: yes
The pathological phenomenon of somatopause, noticeable in hypogonadal ageing subjects, is based on the growth hormone (GH) production and secretion decrease along with the fall in GH binding protein and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) levels ...

Ghrelin Receptor Deletion or Pharmacological Inhibition Improves Muscle Function in Aging Male Mice

open access: yesAging Cell, Volume 25, Issue 4, April 2026.
Ghrelin receptor (GHSR‐1a) deletion and pharmacological inverse agonism improved muscle function and restored mitophagy and mitochondrial biogenesis markers in aged male mice. ABSTRACT Sarcopenia is characterized by age‐related declines in muscle strength and mass, along with impaired physical function.

Ghrelin and growth hormone secretagogues (GHS): modulation of growth hormone secretion and therapeutic applications [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) and somatostatin modulate growth hormone (GH) secretion. A third mechanism was discovered in the last decade, involving the action of growth hormone secretagogues (GHS).

Tauroursodeoxycholic acid dampens oncogenic apoptosis induced by endoplasmic reticulum stress during hepatocarcinogen exposure [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is characterized by the accumulation of unfolded proteins in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), which activates the unfolded protein response (UPR).

Transforming Treatment: The Impact of Bariatric Surgery on Oral Drug Absorption

open access: yesObesity Reviews, Volume 27, Issue 4, April 2026.
ABSTRACT Obesity represents a significant threat to global public health, with an estimated 16% of adults worldwide (2022) being classified as people with obesity, with a body mass index of 30 or more. Bariatric surgery is regarded as the most effective treatment option for people with obesity, with the three main types of bariatric surgery being ...

Long receptor residence time of C26 contributes to super agonist activity at the human β2 adrenoceptor [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Super agonists produce greater functional responses than endogenous agonists in the same assay, and their unique pharmacology is the subject of increasing interest and debate. We propose that receptor residence time and the duration of receptor signaling

O‐Acetyl‐Serine Supplementation Enhances Insulin Secretion and Improves Postprandial Glycaemia in Lean and Prediabetic Mice

open access: yesThe FASEB Journal, Volume 40, Issue 4, 28 February 2026.
Following oral administration, O‐acetyl‐serine (OAS) enters the circulation and transiently accumulates in the pancreas, where it stimulates insulin secretion in a glucose‐dependent manner. OAS also stimulates GLP‐1 secretion, which may partially contribute to its insulin‐secretion–enhancing effects.

Postnatal development and control of the pulmonary surfactant system in the tammar wallaby Macropus eugenii [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
© The Company of BiologistsMarsupials are born at an early stage of development and are adapted for future development inside the pouch. Whether the pulmonary surfactant system is fully established at this altricial stage is unknown.

Exploring metabolic dysfunction in chronic kidney disease [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Impaired kidney function and chronic kidney disease (CKD) leading to kidney failure and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) is a serious medical condition associated with increased morbidity, mortality, and in particular cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk ...
