A distinct tethering step is vital for vacuole membrane fusion
Past experiments with reconstituted proteoliposomes, employing assays that infer membrane fusion from fluorescent lipid dequenching, have suggested that vacuolar SNAREs alone suffice to catalyze membrane fusion in vitro.

Cooperative Function of Atg8‐ and TORC1‐Mediated Activities in Yeast
The atg8Δ mutant is sensitive to rapamycin, and both lipidation‐dependent and ‐independent functions of Atg8 are necessary for survival during impaired TORC1 activity. Atg8‐ and TORC1‐mediated functions may contribute to maintaining vacuolar functions.

Adhesion and Merging of Lipid Bilayers: A Method for Measuring the Free Energy of Adhesion and Hemifusion [PDF]
Lipid bilayers can be induced to adhere to each other by molecular mediators, and, depending on the lipid composition, such adhesion can lead to merging of the contacting monolayers in a process known as hemifusion.

Imaging single retrovirus entry through alternative receptor isoforms and intermediates of virus-endosome fusion. [PDF]
A large group of viruses rely on low pH to activate their fusion proteins that merge the viral envelope with an endosomal membrane, releasing the viral nucleocapsid.

Viral binding and fusion are early steps during viral infection. Surface‐enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy enables the label‐free tracking of molecular events, as the influenza A virus interacts with a host cell model membrane, providing chemical resolution for viral proteins, viral lipids, and host lipids.

Dengue virus ensures its fusion in late endosomes using compartment-specific lipids. [PDF]
Many enveloped viruses invade cells via endocytosis and use different environmental factors as triggers for virus-endosome fusion that delivers viral genome into cytosol.
