Effects of Hyperforin on the Fluidity of Brain Membranes
Pharmacopsychiatry, 2001Hyperforin, an acylphloroglucinol derivative isolated from Hypericum perforatum (St. John's wort, SJW), affects several ionic conductance mechanisms in brain cells by an as yet unknown mechanism. We tested the effects of hyperforin on the fluidity of crude brain membranes from young guinea pigs.

Biotechnological production of hyperforin for pharmaceutical formulation
European Journal of Pharmaceutics and Biopharmaceutics, 2018Hyperforin is a major active constituent of Hypericum perforatum (St. John's wort). It has amazing pharmacological activities, such as antidepressant properties, but it is labile and difficult to synthesize. Its sensitivity and lipophilicity are challenges for processing and formulation.

Pharmacological activity of hyperforin acetate in rats
Behavioural Pharmacology, 2002Hyperforin, the main antidepressant component of Hypericum extract, is not stable with regard to heat and light. Therefore, we investigated a newly synthetized derivative, hyperforin acetate. Herein we demonstrate its efficacy in animal models sensitive to antidepressant and anxiolytic drugs.

Mechanistic Insights into the Antileukemic Activity of Hyperforin
Current Cancer Drug Targets, 2012Hyperforin is a prenylated phloroglucinol present in the medicinal plant St John's wort (Hypericum perforatum). The compound has many biological properties, including antidepressant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antitumor activities. This review focuses on the in vitro antileukemic effects of purified hyperforin and related mechanisms in ...

Inhibition of vesicular uptake of monoamines by hyperforin
Life Sciences, 2002Hyperforin is the major active ingredient of Hypericum perforatum (St John's Wort), a traditional antidepressant medication. This study evaluated its inhibitory effects on the synaptic uptake of monoamines in rat forebrain homogenates, comparing the nature of the inhibition at synaptic and vesicular monoamine transporters.

Evaluation of Hyperforin Analogues for Inhibition of 5-lipoxygenase
Medicinal Chemistry, 2005The acylphloroglucinol hyperforin, a constituent of the herb Hypericum perforatum (St. John's wort), was recently identified as potent and direct inhibitor of 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO), the key enzyme in the biosynthesis of proinflammatory leukotrienes. In this study, naturally occurring analogues of hyperforin, isolated from H.

The first prenylation step in hyperforin biosynthesis
Phytochemistry, 2005Prenylation reactions contribute considerably to the diversity of natural products. Polyprenylated secondary metabolites include hyperforin which is both quantitatively and pharmacologically a major constituent of the medicinal plant Hypericum perforatum (St. John's wort). Cell cultures of the related species Hypericum calycinum were found to contain a

The Reaction of Hyperforin with Hydride Reducing Agents
European Journal of Organic Chemistry, 2006AbstractAs part of a study aimed at generating analogues of hyperforin (1), the reaction of this prenylated phloroglucinol with various hydride reducing agents was investigated. Hyperforin contains two β‐dicarbonyl systems, one of which is non‐enolizable, and it was interesting to assess the relative reactivity of these structural elements in the ...
