Hypoxia-inducible-factor-1 in trauma and critical care

Journal of Critical Care, 2017
HIF-1 is a ubiquitous signaling molecule constantly expressed by the body, but is degraded during normoxic conditions. In hypoxic conditions, it persists and is active. Hypoxia is often associated with trauma due to interrupted blood flow, inflammation or other reasons, causing HIF-1 to be active in signaling and recovery.

HIF‐1: hypoxia‐inducible factor or dysoxia‐inducible factor?

The FASEB Journal, 2006
Hypoxia‐inducible factor 1 (HIF‐1) activates the transcription of genes involved in diverse aspects of cellular and integrative physiology, including energy metabolism, cell growth, survival, invasion, migration or angiogenesis. The activity of this transcription factor is known to be increased by hypoxia, but also by a growing ...

Oxygen(es) and the hypoxia-inducible factor-1.

Biological chemistry, 1997
The hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) is a basic-helix-loop-helix (bHLH) heterodimeric transcription factor activated by reductions in oxygen concentration (hypoxia). Activated HIF-1 upregulates expression of genes involved in the adaptation of higher organisms to hypoxic conditions, caused by e.g.

Role of hypoxia-inducible factor 1 in type 1 diabetes

Trends in Pharmacological Sciences
Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a common autoimmune disease in which dysregulated glucose metabolism is a key feature. T1D is both poorly understood and in need of improved therapeutics. Hypoxia is frequently encountered in multiple tissues in T1D patients including the pancreas and sites of diabetic complications.
