Illumina MiSeq sequencing investigation of Chanhua (Cordyceps cicadae Shing) fungal community structures in different regions

open access: yesJournal of Traditional Chinese Medical Sciences, 2018
Objective: This study was carried out to elucidate the fungal diversity of Chanhua (Cordyceps cicadae Shing), which is an entomogenous fungal parasite that grows on wingless cicada nymphs.

Inulin‐Butyrate Nanogel for Modulation of Gut Microbiome, Intestinal Barrier, and Regulatory T‐Cells in Colitis

open access: yesSmall, EarlyView.
IBD is driven by a vicious cycle of dysbiosis, barrier dysfunction, and immune dysregulation. We developed an inulin–butyrate conjugate nanogel (IBN) that accumulates in inflamed colon and releases butyrate via microbial inulinase/esterase. The inulin shell remodels the microbiome, while localized butyrate strengthens barrier integrity and promotes ...

Distinct Nasal Microbiome Profiles and Prediction Model for Allergic Rhinitis, Nonallergic Rhinitis, and Healthy Children

open access: yesWorld Journal of Otorhinolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, EarlyView.
The alpha and beta diversity of the nasal microbiome differed among children with allergic rhinitis (AR), nonallergic rhinitis (NAR), and healthy controls (HCs). Compared to HC, AR had more Escherichia‐Shigella, Negativicoccus, and Campylobacter, while NAR had more Dolosigranulum and fewer Enterobacteriaceae.

Biochemical Mechanisms and Microorganisms Involved in Anaerobic Testosterone Metabolism in Estuarine Sediments

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2017
Current knowledge on the biochemical mechanisms underlying microbial steroid metabolism in anaerobic ecosystems is extremely limited. Sulfate, nitrate, and iron [Fe (III)] are common electron acceptors for anaerobes in estuarine sediments.

Necromass chemistry drives the functional diversity of the necrobiome, resulting in microbe–organic matter feedbacks

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract In temperate European forests, soil fungal communities, dominated by saprotrophic and ectomycorrhizal (ECM) species, represent almost 25% of soil organic carbon (C) in the soil.

SARS-CoV-2 Sequencing on Illumina MiSeq Using ARTIC Protocol: Part 2 - Illumina DNA Flex Protocol v1

open access: yes, 2020
This protocol is an adaption of several circulating protocols on SARS-CoV-2 sequencing using the ARTIC protocol and the Illumina Nexterra DNA Flex library prep kit. Its purpose is to simplify things for the average state public health laboratory, using equipment and expertise they currently posess, most likely from their funded PulseNet activities ...

Is the endophyte‐based plant protection against aphids mediated by changes in the insect microbiome?

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
We showed that the fungal endophyte Epichloë strain AR37 increased the plant resistance against aphids via the production of indole diterpene alkaloids. The reduction in aphid performance was not associated with changes in abundance/composition/diversity of the insect's bacterial microbiota, but additional endophyte effects on this microbiota cannot be

The complete mitochondrial genome of the hymenopteran hunting robber fly Dasypogon diadema

open access: yesMitochondrial DNA. Part B. Resources, 2019
The complete mitochondrial genome of Dasypogon diadema (Insecta: Diptera) was sequenced using the Illumina MiSeq` platform. Its mt-genome spans over 16,947 bp with a GC content of 26.6% containing 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNA genes, and 2 rRNA genes.
