UV-induced immune suppression and sunscreen [PDF]
Sun protection factor (SPF) that measures sunscreen protection against erythema and edema may not be enough to measure a sunscreen's activity against many other biologic reactions induced by ultraviolet radiation (UV). It may be better to evaluate sunscreen efficacy using various tools including immune protection factor (IPF), mutation protection ...

In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

The mechanisms by which measles virus infection induces transient immune suppression in humans are poorly understood. Here, Laksono and colleagues characterise the pathogenesis of measles-associated immune suppression in unvaccinated children, and shed ...

Reverting Immune Suppression to Enhance Cancer Immunotherapy
Tumors employ strategies to escape immune control. The principle aim of most cancer immunotherapies is to restore effective immune surveillance. Among the different processes regulating immune escape, tumor microenvironment-associated soluble factors ...

Robert H. Rubin and infectious disease in transplantation
Robert H. Rubin, M.D. was among the first physician-scientists to focus attention on the infectious diseases associated with immune suppression. A superb bedside clinician and teacher, he developed many of the concepts central to the care and improved ...

Splenic CD8(+) T cells secrete TGF-beta 1 to exert suppression in mice with anterior chamber-associated immune deviation [PDF]
Background CD8(+) regulatory T cells (Treg) have been considered to be involved in a model of ocular-induced tolerance, known as anterior chamber-associated immune deviation (ACAID).

Suppression of immune response to Listeria monocytogenes: mechanism(s) of immune complex suppression [PDF]
We have investigated possible mechanisms underlying immune complex suppression of resistance to Listeria monocytogenes. Inhibition of resistance was found when immune complexes were formed in vivo in immune mice or in nonimmune mice adoptively transferred with specific antibody.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Targeted calcium influx boosts cytotoxic T lymphocyte function in the tumour microenvironment
Regulatory T cells (Tregs) promote immune suppression in the tumour. Here, the authors show that Tregs suppress cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) activity by impairing Ca2+ signalling and that adoptive transfer of CTLs engineered with an optogenetic control ...
