Interactions between species introduce spurious associations in microbiome studies [PDF]
Microbiota contribute to many dimensions of host phenotype, including disease. To link specific microbes to specific phenotypes, microbiome-wide association studies compare microbial abundances between two groups of samples. Abundance differences, however, reflect not only direct associations with the phenotype, but also indirect effects due to ...

Fast and Efficient Genome Editing of Human FOXP3+ Regulatory T Cells
FOXP3+ regulatory T cells (Tregs) are central for maintaining peripheral tolerance and immune homeostasis. Because of their immunosuppressive characteristics, Tregs are a potential therapeutic target in various diseases such as autoimmunity ...

Ectosomes as immunomodulators [PDF]
Considerable progress has been made in recognizing microvesicles as important mediators of intercellular communication rather than irrelevant cell debris. Microvesicles released by budding directly from the cell membrane surface (i.e., ectocytosis) either spontaneously or in response to various stimuli are called shed vesicles or ectosomes.

A Nested Multi-Scale Model for COVID-19 Viral Infection [PDF]
In this study, we develop and analyze a nested multi-scale model for COVID -19 disease that integrates within-host scale and between-host scale sub-models. First, the well-posedness of the multi-scale model is discussed, followed by the stability analysis of the equilibrium points.

Functional systemic CD4 immunity is required for clinical responses to PD‐L1/PD‐1 blockade therapy
The majority of lung cancer patients progressing from conventional therapies are refractory to PD‐L1/PD‐1 blockade monotherapy. Here, we show that baseline systemic CD4 immunity is a differential factor for clinical responses.

Immunomodulation of immunothrombocytopenia [PDF]
Current treatment strategies in patients with immunothrombocytopenia (ITP) include immunosuppression and the stimulation of platelet production. Research over the last decade has emphasized the important role of Fc-receptors as key molecules responsible for autoantibody-mediated platelet depletion, allowing for a more specific targeting of this pathway
