Inhibitors of sterol biosynthesis and growth in plants and fungi

Phytochemistry, 1989
Abstract Sterols and their derivatives promote and maintain growth and development in plants and fungi by acting as membrane constituents and probably also as hormones, engaged in control of metabolism. Inhibitors of sterol biosynthesis, operating at various stages in the pathway, are useful probes for investigating these functions.

Effect of inhibitors of sterol biosynthesis on growth and sexuality of pythium and zygorhynchus

Mycopathologia, 1976
Seven commercial inhibitors of sterol biosynthesis were tested for their effect upon vegatative growth and sexuality in Pythium acanthicum and Zygorhynchus moelleri. Five compounds (SKF 525, Chlorpropamide, Tolbutamide, Benzmalacene, AY 9944) inhibited both growth and sexuality of both fungi and two (SKF 7732 and SKF 7997) were ineffective. Pythium was

Upregulation of sterol C14-demethylase expression in Trypanosoma cruzi treated with sterol biosynthesis inhibitors

Molecular and Biochemical Parasitology, 2005
Infection with the protozoan, Trypanosoma cruzi, is the cause of Chagas disease that occurs widely throughout Latin America. T. cruzi contains sterol biosynthesis enzymes, and produces sterol products similar to those found in fungi. Antifungal drugs that inhibit ergosterol biosynthesis have potent anti-T.

Side chain azasteroids and thiasteroids as sterol methyltransferase inhibitors in ergosterol biosynthesis

Bioorganic & Medicinal Chemistry, 2009
The synthesis of some novel azasteroids and thiasteroids based on a pregnan nucleus with a Delta7 double bond in two to five steps from the key aldehyde (3S,20S)-20-formylpregn-7-en-3-yl acetate has been disclosed herein. These compounds were evaluated as potential inhibitors of the enzyme Delta24-sterol methyltransferase (24-SMT), which is a key ...

Sterol Biosynthesis Inhibitors: C-4 Demethylation

2015
Two available fungicides block sterol C-4 demethylation in ergosterol biosynthesis: the hydroxyanilide fenhexamid and the amino-pyrazolinone fenpyrazamine, introduced in the early 2000s and 2010s, respectively. Both these fungicides specifically target 3-ketoreductase (Erg27), the third enzyme of the C-4 demethylation enzyme complex.
