The nucleotide sequences of the p40 subunit from man and mouse (GenBank accession numbers M65292, M65272, and M86671) predict polypeptides of 328 and 335 amino acids, respectively.

It enhances differentiation and proliferation of T cells and increases production of proinflammatory cytokines. IL-10 is a pleiotropic cytokine produced by both lymphocytes and mononuclear phagocytes including microglia.

Interleukin 12 and autoimmune diabetes
Nature Genetics, 2001Interleukin 12 (IL-12) has been implicated in the pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes in the non-obese diabetic (NOD) mouse. Following this lead, a new locus associated with human type 1 diabetes, IDDM18, has been identified near the gene encoding the p40 subunit of interleukin 12 (IL12B).
