Single-channel recordings from cultured human retinal pigment epithelial cells. [PDF]

open access: yes, 1988
We have applied patch-clamp techniques to on-cell and excised-membrane patches from human retinal pigment epithelial cells in tissue culture. Single-channel currents from at least four ion channel types were observed: three or more potassium-selective ...

Ion channel expression in human melanoma samples. in silico identification and experimental validation of molecular targets [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Expression of 328 ion channel genes was investigated, by in silico analysis, in 170 human melanoma samples and controls. Ninety-one members of this gene-family (i.e., about 28%) show a significant (p 0.90 and p 90% in most cases).

Epilepsy and ion channels

open access: yesRinsho Shinkeigaku, 2017
Many mutations of genes for ion channels result in some epilepsies. Their electrophysiological studies reveal pathophysiological mechanisms underlining epilepsy and also mechanism of action of several antiepileptic drugs. In this review, We briefly summarize pathophysiology of epilepsy and the mechanisms of antiepileptic drugs.

Sudden anaerobization in Amphibacillus xylanus increases intracellular labile ferrous iron and inhibits cell growth

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Abruptly changing from aerobic to anaerobic conditions (sudden anaerobization) induced growth inhibition and a significant increase in intracellular labile ferrous iron in the aerotolerant anaerobe Amphibacillus xylanus. We found that free flavins mediate efficient electron transfer from NADH to ferric iron under anaerobic conditions, suggesting that ...

Modeled channel distributions explain extracellular recordings from cultured neurons sealed to microelectrodes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
Amplitudes and shapes of extracellular recordings from single neurons cultured on a substrate embedded microelectrode depend not only on the volume conducting properties of the neuron-electrode interface, but might also depend on the distribution of ...

ION CHANNELS OF NOCICEPTION [PDF]

open access: yesAnnual Review of Physiology, 1999
▪ Abstract  Nociceptors are the first cells in the series of neurons that lead to the sensation of pain. The essential functions of nociceptors—transducing noxious stimuli into depolarizations that trigger action potentials, conducting the action potentials from the peripheral sensory site to the synapse in the central nervous system, and converting ...

UiO‐66 metal–organic frameworks in biomedicine: From structural tunability to bioimaging, photodiagnostics, and photodynamic cancer therapy

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
UiO‐66(Zr) metal–organic frameworks are chemically stable, biocompatible, and highly tunable nanomaterials. Their modular structure enables controlled drug delivery, multimodal bioimaging, and light‐activated photodynamic therapy, supporting integrated diagnostic and therapeutic (theranostic) applications in cancer and biomedical research.

Hydrostatic pressure activates HIF‐1α via β‐catenin to promote stemness in breast cancer cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
To mimic the elevated intestinal fluid pressure in breast cancers, we loaded human breast cancer cells (MCF‐7, MDA‐MB‐453, and BT‐474) to 50 mmHg hydrostatic pressure. Hydrostatic pressure exposure upregulated HIF‐1α and induced stemness in MCF‐7 and BT‐474 cells.

Spiropyran modified micro-fluidic chip channels as photonically controlled self-indicating system for metal ion accumulation and release [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
In this paper, we show how through integrating the beneficial characteristics of micro-fluidic devices and spiropyrans dyes, a simple and very innovative chip configured as an on-line photonically controlled self-indicating system for metal ion ...

The ion channels of endomembranes

open access: yesPhysiological Reviews
The endomembrane system consists of organellar membranes in the biosynthetic pathway [endoplasmic reticulum (ER), Golgi apparatus, and secretory vesicles] as well as those in the degradative pathway (early endosomes, macropinosomes, phagosomes, autophagosomes, late endosomes, and lysosomes).
