Myocardial protection with postconditioning is not enhanced by ischemic preconditioning

The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, 2004
Ischemic preconditioning (IPC) has been used in off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery (OPCAB) to reduce potential injury secondary to ligation of the target vessel. Previous studies have shown that a brief period of repetitive coronary occlusion applied at the onset of reperfusion, postconditioning (postcon), attenuates myocardial injury.

Cardioprotection by ischemic postconditioning during surgical procedures

Expert Review of Cardiovascular Therapy, 2008
Acute myocardial ischemic insult remains the most prevalent cause of postoperative mortality and morbidity despite major advances in cardiovascular medicine. Preoperative cardiac assessment and optimization, intraoperative anesthetic techniques and perioperative medical prophylaxis are all used to minimize cardiac morbidity.

[Ischemic pre- and postconditioning].

Deutsche medizinische Wochenschrift (1946), 2006
One or several short cycles of ischemia/reperfusion before (preconditioning) or after (postconditioning) a sustained coronary occlusion with subsequent reperfusion reduce the ultimate infarct size. The protection is potent, but limited to a narrow time frame.

Realizing the clinical potential of ischemic preconditioning and postconditioning

Nature Clinical Practice Cardiovascular Medicine, 2005
After an acute myocardial infarction (AMI), early reperfusion by thrombolysis or primary percutaneous coronary intervention remains the most-effective strategy for limiting the size of an evolving infarct. The mortality from AMI, however, remains significant, due partly to the lethal reperfusion injury that occurs on reperfusing the ischemic myocardium.

Ischemic Postconditioning: From Receptor to End-Effector

Antioxidants & Redox Signaling, 2011
Ischemic preconditioning, a robust cardioprotective intervention, has limited clinical efficacy because it must be initiated before myocardial ischemia. Conversely, ischemic postconditioning, repeated brief reocclusions of a coronary artery after release of prolonged coronary occlusion, provides cardioprotection in clinically feasible settings, that is,

Ischemic Postconditioning of the Liver Graft in Adult Liver Transplantation

Transplantation, 2015
Ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury is the main cause of graft failure in liver transplantation (LT). Ischemic postconditioning (IPo) has shown to be beneficial against I/R injury. Our objective was to compare the results of LT with or without IPo.One hundred patients undergoing LT alternatively received IPo or not.

[Phenomenon of heart ischemic postconditioning].

Rossiiskii fiziologicheskii zhurnal imeni I.M. Sechenova, 2012
Authors of review analyzed papers on problem of heart ischemic postconditioning. In the review, it was demonstrated that postconditioning decreased an infarct size, prevented cardiomyocytes apoptosis, improved cardiac contractility in reperfusion period, augmented cardiac tolerance to arrhythmogenic impact ofreperfusion, prevented neutrophil invasion ...

[Effects of combined ischemic postconditioning, remote ischemic postconditioning and naloxone postconditioning on focal cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury in rats].

Zhonghua yi xue za zhi, 2012
To assess the effects of ischemic postconditioning, remote ischemic postconditioning and naloxone postconditioning on focal cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury in rats.A total of 110 adult SD rats were randomly divided into 5 groups (n = 22 each).

Ischemic Postconditioning Attenuates Renal Ischemic/Reperfusion Injury in Mongrel Dogs

Urology, 2010
To investigate the effect of Postcond on renal ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury in a canine model. I/R injury is the most common cause of renal dysfunction. Ischemic postconditioning (Postcond) is a phenomenon by which intermittent interruptions of blood flow in the early phase of reperfusion can protect organs from I/R injury.Forty adult male mongrel

Effect of minocycline postconditioning and ischemic postconditioning on myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury in atherosclerosis rabbits

Journal of Huazhong University of Science and Technology [Medical Sciences], 2012
This study examined the protective effect of ischemic postconditioning (IPoC) and minocycline postconditioning (MT) on myocardial ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury in atherosclerosis (AS) animals and the possible mechanism. Forty male healthy rabbits were injected with bovine serum albumin following feeding on a high fat diet for 6 weeks to establish ...
