Pharmacology and toxicology of kratom

The term kratom is commonly used for both Mitragyna speciosa and herbal products prepared mainly from leaves. Kratom is well known as a drug that can serve as a less toxic and less-addictive pain-relieving substitute for opium, as well as a therapy for hypertension, cough, and diarrhea. Its major alkaloid, mitragynine, also deserves concern.

Compost teas derived from bell pepper and citrus waste are rich in bioactive phenolics and lignin derivatives, showing strong antibacterial activity against gram‐positive bacteria and potent antiviral effects against HSV‐1 and RSV. These findings highlight their potential as sustainable, circular bioresources for biomedical applications.
