Astaxanthin Reverses Oxidative Stress‐Induced Dysfunction in Human Periodontal Ligament Stem Cells by Activating the Nrf2/ARE Pathway

open access: yesStem Cells International, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Background Oxidative stress plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of periodontitis and compromises the regenerative potential of human periodontal ligament stem cells (hPDLSCs). Astaxanthin (ASX), a potent natural antioxidant with both lipophilic and hydrophilic properties, has been shown to scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS).

Storm‐Petrels Aggregate on the Open Sea to Feast on Opportune Blubber

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 12, December 2025.
During a pelagic survey in the Galápagos, I recorded at least fifty Elliot's storm‐petrels (Oceanites gracilis) foraging at a large piece of drifting blubber. Individuals pattered at the sea surface to pick up oil droplets, a foraging mode consistent with storm‐petrel ecology yet rarely documented in the context of mammal carcasses.

Technological Advancements in Carotenoid‐Based Encapsulated Systems: Emerging Trends in Health‐Promoting Benefits and Their Role in Nutrient Delivery

open access: yeseFood, Volume 6, Issue 6, December 2025.
Encapsulation has emerged as a promising strategy to enhance carotenoid stability, bioavailability, and antioxidant capacity. This technique involves enclosing carotenoids within protective materials at the micro or nanoscale, protecting against environmental, processing, and gastrointestinal stresses.
