The aberrant expression of the mesenchymal variant of FGFR2 in the epithelial context inhibits autophagy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Signaling of the epithelial splice variant of fibroblast growth factor receptor 2 (FGFR2b) triggers both differentiation and autophagy, while the aberrant expression of the mesenchymal FGFR2c isoform in epithelial cells induces impaired differentiation ...

LC3 conjugation system in mammalian autophagy

open access: yesThe International Journal of Biochemistry & Cell Biology, 2004
Autophagy is the bulk degradation of proteins and organelles, a process essential for cellular maintenance, cell viability, differentiation and development in mammals. Autophagy has significant associations with neurodegenerative diseases, cardiomyopathies, cancer, programmed cell death, and bacterial and viral infections.

Recruitment of LC3 to damaged Golgi apparatus [PDF]

open access: yesCell Death & Differentiation, 2018
LC3 is a protein that can associate with autophagosomes, autolysosomes, and phagosomes. Here, we show that LC3 can also redistribute toward the damaged Golgi apparatus where it clusters with SQSTM1/p62 and lysosomes. This organelle-specific relocation, which did not involve the generation of double-membraned autophagosomes, could be observed after ...

Beyond autophagy: LC3-associated phagocytosis and endocytosis

open access: yesScience Advances, 2022
Noncanonical functions of the autophagy machinery in pathways including LC3-associated phagocytosis and LC3-associated endocytosis have garnered increasing interest in both normal physiology and pathobiology. New discoveries over the past decade of noncanonical uses of the autophagy machinery in these distinct molecular mechanisms have led to robust ...

SIRT4 positively regulates autophagy via ULK1, but independently of HDAC6 and OPA1

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Cells expressing SIRT4 (H161Y), a catalytically inactive mutant of the sirtuin SIRT4, fail to upregulate LC3B‐II and exhibit a reduced autophagic flux under stress conditions. Interestingly, SIRT4(H161Y) promotes phosphorylation of ULK1 at S638 and S758 that are associated with inhibition of autophagy initiation.

Antiretroviral Drugs Impact Autophagy: Opportunities for Drug Repurposing

open access: yesFrontiers in Bioscience-Landmark
Autophagy is an evolutionarily conserved process in which intracellular macromolecules are degraded in a lysosomal-dependent manner. It is central to cellular energy homeostasis and to quality control of intracellular components.

Autophagy in Microglia and Alzheimer's disease [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common neurodegenerative disease, characterized by amyloid-beta plaques, neurofibrillary tangles and neuroinflammation. Autophagy has been associated with several neurodegenerative diseases.

LC3-associated phagocytosis in microbial pathogenesis

open access: yesInternational Journal of Medical Microbiology, 2018
Phagocytosis is essential for uptake and elimination of pathogenic microorganisms. Autophagy is a highly conserved mechanism for incorporation of cellular constituents to replenish nutrients by degradation. Recently, parts of the autophagy machinery - above all microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3 (LC3) - were found to be specifically ...

β‐Catenin/c‐Myc Axis Modulates Autophagy Response to Different Ammonia Concentrations

open access: yesAdvanced Biology, Volume 9, Issue 3, March 2025.
Ammonia, detoxified by the liver into urea and glutamine, impacts autophagy differently at varying levels. Low ammonia activates autophagy via c‐Myc and β‐catenin, while high levels suppress it. Using Huh7 cells and Spf‐ash mice, c‐Myc's role in cytoprotective autophagy is revealed, offering insights into hyperammonemia and potential therapeutic ...

Localization of Autophagosome in Porcine Follicular Cumulus-oocyte Complex

open access: yesJournal of Animal Reproduction and Biotechnology, 2017
Autophagy is an intracellular degradation and recycling system. Oocyte maturation is dynamic process, in which various proteins should be synthesized and degraded.
