A Sec14-like phosphatidylinositol transfer protein paralog defines a novel class of heme-binding proteins

open access: yeseLife, 2020
Yeast Sfh5 is an unusual member of the Sec14-like phosphatidylinositol transfer protein (PITP) family. Whereas PITPs are defined by their abilities to transfer phosphatidylinositol between membranes in vitro, and to stimulate phosphoinositide signaling ...

Galactolipid and Phospholipid Profile and Proteome Alterations in Soybean Leaves at the Onset of Salt Stress

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2021
Salinity is a major environmental factor that constrains soybean yield and grain quality. Given our past observations using the salt-sensitive soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merr.) accession C08 on its early responses to salinity and salt-induced ...

Lipid signaling to membrane proteins: From second messengers to membrane domains and adapter-free endocytosis

open access: yesThe Journal of General Physiology, 2018
Hilgemann et al. explain how lipid signaling to membrane proteins involves a hierarchy of mechanisms from lipid binding to membrane domain coalescence.

Reciprocal control of viral infection and phosphoinositide dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Phosphoinositides, although scarce, regulate key cellular processes, including membrane dynamics and signaling. Viruses exploit these lipids to support their entry, replication, assembly, and egress. The central role of phosphoinositides in infection highlights phosphoinositide metabolism as a promising antiviral target.

Spatiotemporal and quantitative analyses of phosphoinositides – fluorescent probe—and mass spectrometry‐based approaches

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fluorescent probes allow dynamic visualization of phosphoinositides in living cells (left), whereas mass spectrometry provides high‐sensitivity, isomer‐resolved quantitation (right). Their synergistic use captures complementary aspects of lipid signaling. This review illustrates how these approaches reveal the spatiotemporal regulation and quantitative

A live-cell ergosterol reporter for visualization of the effects of fluconazole on the human fungal pathogen Candida albicans

open access: yesmBio, 2023
Ergosterol, an essential plasma membrane amphipathic lipid, is a major component of the fungal plasma membrane. Most fungal pathogens are susceptible to azole drugs that target ergosterol biosynthesis, and resistance/tolerance to azoles is increasingly ...

The Escherichia coli Phospholipase PldA Regulates Outer Membrane Homeostasis via Lipid Signaling

open access: yesmBio, 2018
The outer membrane (OM) bilayer of Gram-negative bacteria is biologically unique in its asymmetrical organization of lipids, with an inner leaflet composed of glycerophospholipids (PLs) and a surface-exposed outer leaflet composed of lipopolysaccharide ...

Lipid phosphate phosphatases and signaling

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 2009
Lipid phosphate phosphatases (LPPs) regulate cell signaling by modifying the concentrations of lipid phosphates versus their dephosphorylated products. The ecto-activity regulates the availability of extracellular lysophosphatidate (LPA) and sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) and thereby signaling by their respective receptors.

By dawn or dusk—how circadian timing rewrites bacterial infection outcomes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The circadian clock shapes immune function, yet its influence on infection outcomes is only beginning to be understood. This review highlights how circadian timing alters host responses to the bacterial pathogens Salmonella enterica, Listeria monocytogenes, and Streptococcus pneumoniae revealing that the effectiveness of immune defense depends not only

Novel endogenous N-acyl amides activate TRPV1-4 receptors, BV-2 microglia, and are regulated in brain in an acute model of inflammation

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular Neuroscience, 2014
A family of endogenous lipids, structurally analogous to the endogenous cannabinoid, N-arachidonoyl ethanolamine (Anandamide), and called N-acyl amides have emerged as a family of biologically active compounds at TRP receptors.
