Unmasking the Desert Phantom: Genetic Evidence Does Not Support the Validity of the Enigmatic Boehme's Horned Viper

open access: yesZoologica Scripta, Volume 54, Issue 6, Page 817-822, November 2025.
ABSTRACT The viperid genus Cerastes contains four desert‐adapted species distributed throughout the Saharo‐Arabian arid belt that are typically associated with loose sands. Cerastes boehmei is restricted to one locality in Tunisia and is known only from the holotype.

Testing whether macroevolution follows microevolution: Are colour differences among swans (Cygnus) attributable to variation at the MC1R locus?

open access: yesBMC Evolutionary Biology, 2008
Background The MC1R (melanocortin-1 receptor) locus underlies intraspecific variation in melanin-based dark plumage coloration in several unrelated birds with plumage polymorphisms.

Regulation of Melanogenesis in Skin Epidermal Keratinocytes via Activation of α7 Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor on the Expression of α‐Melanocyte‐Stimulating Hormone

open access: yesThe FASEB Journal, Volume 39, Issue 20, 31 October 2025.
α7 nAChR modulates UVB‐induced α‐MSH production during melanogenesis. UVB irradiation induces DNA damage in epidermal keratinocytes, causing upregulation of POMC transcription via the increase of its transcription factor p53, which in turn leads to elevated α‐MSH mastering melanin synthesis in epidermal melanocytes.

Pigmentary Markers in Danes--Associations with Quantitative Skin Colour, Nevi Count, Familial Atypical Multiple-Mole, and Melanoma Syndrome.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2016
To investigate whether pigmentation genes involved in the melanogenic pathway (melanogenesis) contributed to melanoma predisposition, we compared pigmentary genetics with quantitative skin pigmentation measurements, the number of atypical nevi, the total

Dorsal Pigmentation and Its Association with Functional Variation in MC1R in a Lizard from Different Elevations on the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau

open access: yesGenome Biology and Evolution, 2020
Identification of the role of the MC1R gene has provided major insights into variation in skin pigmentation in several organisms, including humans, but the evolutionary genetics of this variation is less well established.

Bayesian inference of natural selection from allele frequency time series

open access: yes, 2016
The advent of accessible ancient DNA technology now allows the direct ascertainment of allele frequencies in ancestral populations, thereby enabling the use of allele frequency time series to detect and estimate natural selection.

Mechanism of Mitf inhibition and morphological differentiation effects of hirsein A on B16 melanoma cells revealed by DNA microarray [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
BackgroundWe have previously reported that hirsein A inhibits melanogenesis in B16 melanoma cells by downregulating the Mitf gene expression.ObjectiveIn this study, microarray was employed to determine the transcriptional response of B16 cells to hirsein

Interaction between the melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R) and agouti signalling protein genes (ASIP), and their association with black and brown coat colour phenotypes in peruvian alpaca

open access: yesItalian Journal of Animal Science, 2020
The aim of this work was to assess the interaction between MC1R and ASIP genes in determining coat colour variation in black and brown Peruvian alpacas. Skin biopsies were collected from 25 black alpacas and 15 brown alpacas.

Sequence Variation of Melanocortin 1 Receptor (MC1R) Gene and Association with Plumage Color in Domestic Geese

open access: yesThe Journal of Poultry Science, 2014
In contrast to other domestic and wild animals, the genetic variation of MC1R gene and association with plumage color has not been investigated in domestic goose.
