Fetal vs adult megakaryopoiesis

Blood, 2022
Abstract Fetal and neonatal megakaryocyte progenitors are hyperproliferative compared with adult progenitors and generate a large number of small, low-ploidy megakaryocytes. Historically, these developmental differences have been interpreted as “immaturity.” However, more recent studies have demonstrated that the small, low-ploidy fetal ...

Neonatal and adult megakaryopoiesis

Current Opinion in Hematology, 2011
It has become increasingly clear that there are substantial biological differences between fetal/neonatal and adult megakaryopoiesis. Over the last 18 months, studies challenged the paradigm that neonatal megakaryocytes are immature and revealed a developmentally unique uncoupling of proliferation, polyploidization, and cytoplasmic maturation.

Molecular mechanisms of megakaryopoiesis

Cellular and Molecular Life Sciences, 2006
One function of bone marrow megakaryocytes (MKs) is the controlled release of platelets into the circulation. Over the past few years, molecular mechanisms that contribute to MK development and differentiation have begun to be elucidated. This review provides a brief overview of megakaryopoiesis and platelet function, and the importance of selected ...

Megakaryopoiesis disturbances in atherosclerotic rabbits

Atherosclerosis, 1987
Rabbits given a hypercholesterolemic diet (500 mg/day) for 6 months and then maintained for another 6 months on a normal diet were found to have developed fibrous lipidic lesions in the aorta. Although circulating platelet levels in these animals were normal there was a reduction in mean megakaryocyte ploidy.

Megakaryopoiesis in patients with cyclic thrombocytopenia

British Journal of Haematology, 1995
Summary Megakaryopoiesis was examined in 10 patients (eight females and two males) with cyclic thrombocytopenia (CT) to investigate the underlying pathogenesis. Numbers of CFU‐Meg and megakaryocytes and the mean cytoplasmic area (mean area) of megakaryocytes at the peak, nadir, ascent mid phase, and descent mid phase of the platelet cycle were ...

Megakaryopoiesis and Thrombopoiesis

2017
Platelets are formed from the cytoplasm of megakaryocytes (MKs) that reside in the bone marrow (BM). MKs arise from hematopoietic stem cells in the osteoblastic niche in BM. The primary regulator of megakaryopoiesis is thrombopoietin. It is generally accepted that MKs migrate into the vascular niche and produce platelets; however, the mechanism by ...

Molecular Control of Megakaryopoiesis and Thrombopoiesis

International Journal of Hematology, 2002
Megakaryopoiesis and subsequent thrombopoiesis occur through complex biologic steps: megakaryocyte precursors that developed from hematopoietic stem cells initially proliferate, then differentiate into mature polyploid megakaryocytes, and finally release platelets.

Dysplastic Megakaryopoiesis with Thrombocytopenia and Chromosomal Aberration

American Journal of Clinical Pathology, 1992
A case of isolated thrombocytopenia with decreased platelet production and abnormal megakaryopoiesis is described. In the bone marrow, a chromosomally aberrant clone, 45,XX,-11,-18,+der (11;18)(11q13;18p11), was found. These findings indicate a myelodysplastic nature of the abnormal thrombocytopoiesis.

Megakaryopoiesis: Transcriptional Insights into Megakaryocyte Maturation

Frontiers in Bioscience, 2007
Platelets are small anucleate cells that travel near the vessel wall during laminar flow. In response to vascular injury, platelets undergo alterations in morphology which allow them to aggregate and cover the injured site. Platelets are produced by megakaryocytes in a process that involves the formation of platelet precursors called proplatelets and ...

ABC transporters in megakaryopoiesis and platelet activity

Thrombosis Research, 2017
ATP-binding cassette (ABC) is a family of transporters that facilitates the translocation of substrates across cell membrane using its ATPase subunit. These transporters have key roles in multidrug resistance, lipid homeostasis, antigen processing, immunity, cell proliferation and hematopoiesis.
