Characterization of methionine oxidation and methionine sulfoxide reduction using methionine-rich cysteine-free proteins [PDF]
Abstract Background Methionine (Met) residues in proteins can be readily oxidized by reactive oxygen species to Met sulfoxide (MetO). MetO is a promising physiological marker of oxidative stress and its inefficient repair by MetO reductases (Msrs) has been linked to neurodegeneration and aging. Conventional methods of

Methionine metabolism, functions, and application in swine
Methionine (Met) is the only sulfur-containing essential amino acid for animals and is the second or third limiting amino acid in swine diets. It plays a role not only in protein synthesis, but also as an important methyl donor to participate in various ...

Kinetics and mechanism of the oxidation of methionine by quinolinium chlorochromate [PDF]
The oxidation of methionine by quinolinium chlorochromate (QCC) has been studied, in the presence of chloroacetic acid, and in water-acetic acid mixtures of varying mole fractions. The reaction is first order with respect to methionine, QCC and acid. The

Methionine 129 variant of human prion protein oligomerizes more rapidly than the valine 129 variant - Implications for disease susceptibility to Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease [PDF]
The human PrP gene (PRNP) has two common alleles that encode either methionine or valine at codon 129. This polymorphism modulates disease susceptibility and phenotype of human transmissible spongiform encyphalopathies, but the molecular mechanism by ...

Methionine sulfoxide reductase contributes to meeting dietary methionine requirements [PDF]
Methionine sulfoxide reductases are present in all aerobic organisms. They contribute to antioxidant defenses by reducing methionine sulfoxide in proteins back to methionine. However, the actual in vivo roles of these reductases are not well defined.

Reduction of methionine sulfoxide to methionine by Escherichia coli [PDF]
L-Methionine-dl-sulfoxide can support the growth of an Escherichia coli methionine auxotroph, suggesting the presence of an enzyme(s) capable of reducing the sulfoxide to methionine. This was verified by showing that a cell-free extract of E. coli catalyzes the conversion of methionine sulfoxide to methionine.
