Drosophila as a Model System to Investigate the Effects of Mitochondrial Variation on Innate Immunity

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology, 2020
Understanding why the response to infection varies between individuals remains one of the major challenges in immunology and infection biology. A substantial proportion of this heterogeneity can be explained by individual genetic differences which result

Melatonin Exerts Chondroprotective Effects Against Osteoarthritis by Promoting PI3K/AKT/FoxO3‐Mediated Mitophagy

open access: yesThe Kaohsiung Journal of Medical Sciences, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Osteoarthritis (OA) is a prevalent degenerative joint disease. This study combines bioinformatics analysis with in vivo and in vitro experiments to elucidate the molecular mechanisms through which melatonin (MT) regulates mitophagy to alleviate OA.

New mitogenomes of Runcinidae and Facelinidae: two understudied heterobranch families (Mollusca: Gastropoda) [PDF]

open access: yes
Here, we present the mitochondrial sequences of two sea slugs (Heterobranchia): Runcina aurata and Facelina auriculata, the latter being the type species of the family.

The first next-generation sequencing approach to the mitochondrial phylogeny of African monogenean parasites (Platyhelminthes: Gyrodactylidae and Dactylogyridae) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Background Monogenean flatworms are the main ectoparasites of fishes. Representatives of the species-rich families Gyrodactylidae and Dactylogyridae, especially those infecting cichlid fishes and clariid catfishes, are important parasites

Phthalate Metabolite, Mono(2‐Ethyl‐5‐Hydroxyhexyl) Phthalate (MEHHP), Promotes Uterine‐Fibroid–Associated Phenotypes in Myometrial Stem Cell‐Derived 3D Organoids

open access: yesEnvironmental Toxicology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study investigates how phthalate exposure contributes to uterine fibroid (UF) development by studying the effects of the Mono‐(2‐ethyl‐5‐hydroxyhexyl) phthalate (MEHHP), a metabolite of Di(2‐ethylhexyl) phthalate, on myometrial stem cells (MMSCs).

Effects of Tributyltin Chloride on Human Neuronal Differentiation and Mice Brain Development

open access: yesEnvironmental Toxicology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT According to the developmental origins of health and disease hypothesis, perinatal exposure to an environmental toxicant during the development of the nervous system could cause a permanent cellular modification that may promote the appearance of neurodegenerative diseases at an older age.

Genomic characterization of a South American Phytophthora hybrid mandates reassessment of the geographic origins of Phytophthora infestans [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
As the oomycete pathogen causing potato late blight disease, Phytophthora infestans triggered the famous 19th-century Irish potato famine and remains the leading cause of global commercial potato crop destruction.

Full‐length transcriptome profiling of true bug mitochondrial genomes reveals the unique transcriptional regulation during insect evolution

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
The mitogenome was transcribed into complete primary polycistrons on both strands. The heteropteran mitochondrial transcription termination factor (HmTTF) functions as a bidirectional attenuator rather than a terminator, and co‐evolution of HmTTF and the binding sites was observed.

The Genetic Architecture of Intra-Species Hybrid Mito-Nuclear Epistasis

open access: yesFrontiers in Genetics, 2018
Genetic variants that are neutral within, but deleterious between, populations (Dobzhansky-Muller Incompatibilities) are thought to initiate hybrid dysfunction and then to accumulate and complete the speciation process.

Mitogenomics of Central American weakly-electric fishes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Electric fishes are a diverse group of freshwater organisms with the ability to generate electric organ discharges (EODs) that are used for communication and electrolocation. This group (ca.
