Mitochondrial carrier proteins [PDF]

open access: yesFEBS Letters, 1994
Ten mitochondrial carriers have been purified from animal mitochondria. They are small proteins with a molecular mass ranging from 28 to 34 kDa on SDS‐PAGE. So far, five of these proteins have been sequenced. Their polypeptide chain consists of three tandemly related sequences of about 100 amino acids.

Effects of Laser Radiation on Mitochondria and Mitochondrial Proteins Subjected to Nitric Oxide

open access: yesFrontiers in Medicine, 2018
The biological roles of heme and nonheme nitrosyl complexes in physiological and pathophysiological conditions as metabolic key players are considered in this study. Two main physiological functions of protein nitrosyl complexes are discussed—(1) a depot

Dual targeted mitochondrial proteins are characterized by lower MTS parameters and total net charge. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2008
BACKGROUND: In eukaryotic cells, identical proteins can be located in different subcellular compartments (termed dual-targeted proteins). METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We divided a reference set of mitochondrial proteins (published single gene studies)

Loss of Drosophila Clueless differentially affects the mitochondrial proteome compared to loss of Sod2 and Pink1

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2022
Mitochondria contain their own DNA, mitochondrial DNA, which encodes thirteen proteins. However, mitochondria require thousands of proteins encoded in the nucleus to carry out their many functions.

Control of mitochondrial biogenesis and function by the ubiquitin–proteasome system [PDF]

open access: yesOpen Biology, 2017
Mitochondria are pivotal organelles in eukaryotic cells. The complex proteome of mitochondria comprises proteins that are encoded by nuclear and mitochondrial genomes. The biogenesis of mitochondrial proteins requires their transport in an unfolded state

The E3 ubiquitin ligase FBXL6 controls the quality of newly synthesized mitochondrial ribosomal proteins

open access: yesCell Reports, 2023
Summary: In mammals, about 99% of mitochondrial proteins are synthesized in the cytosol as precursors that are subsequently imported into the organelle. The mitochondrial health and functions rely on an accurate quality control of these imported proteins.

Hsp70 in mitochondrial biogenesis [PDF]

open access: yes, 1994
The family of hsp70 (70 kilodalton heat shock protein) molecular chaperones plays an essential and diverse role in cellular physiology, Hsp70 proteins appear to elicit their effects by interacting with polypeptides that present domains which exhibit non ...

Mechanisms of Modulation of Mitochondrial Architecture

open access: yesBiomolecules, 2023
Mitochondrial network architecture plays a critical role in cellular physiology. Indeed, alterations in the shape of mitochondria upon exposure to cellular stress can cause the dysfunction of these organelles.

Mitochondrial ribosome assembly in Neurospora. Structural analysis of mature and partially assembled ribosomal subunits by equilibrium centrifugation in CsCl gradients [PDF]

open access: yes, 1982
In Neurospora, one protein associated with the mitochondrial small ribosomal subunit (S-5, Mr 52,000) is synthesized intramitochondrially and is assumed to be encoded by mtDNA.
