Discovery of an Atypical Arp2/3 Complex in Malaria Parasites Sheds New Light on Nuclear Actin

open access: yesCytoskeleton, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The Arp2/3 complex is a key actin nucleator essential for cytoskeletal dynamics in eukaryotes. Previously believed absent in apicomplexan parasites, we recently identified an atypical Arp2/3 complex in malaria parasites consisting of five divergent subunits and a putative kinetochore‐associated factor.

The chromosomal passenger complex and the spindle assembly checkpoint: kinetochore-microtubule error correction and beyond

open access: yesCell Division, 2008
During mitosis, correct bipolar chromosome attachment to the mitotic spindle is an essential prerequisite for the equal segregation of chromosomes. The spindle assembly checkpoint can prevent chromosome segregation as long as not all chromosome pairs ...

Titin Is Present in the Elastic Tethers That Connect Separating Anaphase Chromosomes in Crane‐Fly Spermatocytes

open access: yesCytoskeleton, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Elastic tethers connect telomeres of separating chromosomes in anaphase of animal cells. Immunofluorescence staining of titin in crane‐fly spermatocytes, using 4 different antibodies, shows that the giant elastic protein titin seems to be a component of mitotic tethers: titin “strands” extend between separating chromosomes, connecting their ...

USP9X stabilizes XIAP to regulate mitotic cell death and chemoresistance in aggressive B‐cell lymphoma

open access: yesEMBO Molecular Medicine, 2016
The mitotic spindle assembly checkpoint (SAC) maintains genome stability and marks an important target for antineoplastic therapies. However, it has remained unclear how cells execute cell fate decisions under conditions of SAC‐induced mitotic arrest ...

Arabidopsis AUGMIN8 Contains Two Independent Microtubule Association Domains

open access: yesCytoskeleton, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Plant cells create a plasma membrane‐associated network of microtubules that are nucleated by γ‐tubulin ring complexes primarily through microtubule‐dependent microtubule nucleation (MDMN). This dynamic array organizes into specific patterns in response to developmental and environmental cues to influence primary cell wall construction.

Intravenous Lipopolysaccharide Challenge in Healthy Participants Reveals Pharmacodynamic Markers in Blood and Bone Marrow for Early‐Phase Oncology Drug Development

open access: yesClinical Pharmacology &Therapeutics, EarlyView.
Demonstrating pharmacological effects in early‐phase oncology clinical trials remains challenging, largely due to the lack of robust pharmacodynamic markers. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is used as an immune challenge agent in healthy participants to study drugs for autoimmune conditions.

Embryonic development of the Mediterranean starfish Hacelia attenuata

open access: yesDevelopmental Dynamics, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Starfish play essential ecological roles as predators and ecosystem regulators; however, detailed developmental descriptions exist for only a handful of species, none of which are from the Mediterranean Sea. Results In this study, we provide the first full account of the development of the Mediterranean starfish Hacelia attenuata ...

Piezosurgical partial ostectomy of the incisive bone for an ossifying fibroma removal in a 4‐year‐old Warmblood gelding

open access: yesEquine Veterinary Journal, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Ossifying fibromas are uncommon in horses and complete surgical excision with premaxillectomy, maxillectomy or mandibulectomy is recommended. Piezosurgery has been previously used in equines only in one study. Objective To report a case of ossifying fibroma treated with piezosurgery and to describe its follow‐up.

Centrosomal Actin Assembly Is Required for Proper Mitotic Spindle Formation and Chromosome Congression

open access: yesiScience, 2019
Summary: Cytoskeletal cross talk between actin filaments and microtubules is a common mechanism governing the assembly of cellular structures, i.e., during filopodia formation or cilia organization.

Mitotic Spindle: Disturbing a Subtle Balance [PDF]

open access: yesCurrent Biology, 2005
Mitotic spindles maintain a roughly constant length in metaphase, so the forces between the spindle poles are balanced. A new study involving screening molecules believed to mediate this force balance has found that spindle length is relatively insensitive to perturbations of molecular motor force-generating activities, but more sensitive to ...
