Usefulness of compounds with monacolin K in a case of statins intolerance
Clínica e Investigación en Arteriosclerosis, 2018Many patients with familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) or in secondary prevention situations and with statin intolerance do not achieve LDL-C targets, and require treatment with PCSK9 inhibitors (iPCSK9) and ezetimibe. The case is presented on a patient with FH and total intolerance to statins.

Identification of mokB involved in monacolin K biosynthesis in Monascus pilosus
Biotechnology Letters, 2009Monacolin K (MK), which is widely used as an antihypercholesterolemia medicine, is produced as a fungal secondary metabolite through the polyketide pathway. The MK biosynthetic gene cluster proposed for Monascus pilosus BCRC38072 was also identified in M. pilosus NBRC4480.

Proteomic Analysis of Caco-2 Cells Treated with Monacolin K
Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 2006Monascus species is an important traditional fermentation fungus used on food. Monacolin K (a secondary metabolite of Monascus, a competitive inhibitor of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase) in inhibition of mevalonate synthesis may result in reductions of isoprenoid prenylation in cells.

Glycerol is the principal by-product of biodiesel production which can be utilized by fungi for beneficial metabolites production. In this study, effects of glycerol on main metabolites production and gene expression of pigment and monacolin K (MK) synthesis-related genes of Monascus pilosus MS-1, a high-MK-producing but citrinin-free strain, were ...

Analysis of Monacolin K in Food Supplements
2022Introduction: According to World Health Organization (WHO) 2019 data most people died ofischemic heart disease (16 % of the world’s deaths) [1]. One of the main risk factors for the development of cardiovascular diseases is hypercholesterolaemia. LDL cholesterol should be reducedto prevent them [2].

[Red yeast rice, monacolin K, and pleiotropic effects.]
Recenti progressi in medicina, 2018The extracts of red yeast rice represent a nutraceutical with proven cholesterol lowering effect. Its efficacy is proportional to the concentration on monacolin K in the extract that could reach the amount of 10 mg per daily dose. The daily assumption of monacolin K could then reduce LDL-cholesterol plasma levels by 15-25% in 6-8 weeks.
