Interactions of Mucus Monosaccharides and the Epidermal Microbiome in Four Benthic Elasmobranchs. [PDF]

open access: yesEnviron Microbiol Rep
Here we collected mucus and microbes from the skin of Elasmobranchs to identify interactions between mucus and the microbial community. We identified key microbial genes involved in the metabolism of mucus carbohydrates in Elasmobranchs. ABSTRACT Epidermal mucus is a complicated mixture of macromolecules which acts as the first line of defence for ...

A Novel Neutral Polysaccharide From Bamboo Shoot Processing Liquid: Structural Characterization and In Vitro TLR4/NF‐κB Mediated Anti‐Inflammatory Activity

open access: yesFood Bioengineering, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Value‐added utilization of resources can be developed from by‐products of agricultural processing. In this study, a neutral polysaccharide (BSLP‐1, 19,799 Da) was obtained from bamboo shoot processing liquid. Structurally, BSLP‐1 has a backbone of →4)‐α‐D‐Glcp‐(1→ and →4,6)‐α‐D‐Glcp‐(1→, with side chains of →5)‐α‐L‐Araf‐(1→ and α‐D‐Glcp‐(1→6 ...

Bitter Melon Polysaccharides Enhance Goblet Cell Function and Mucosal Integrity in DSS‐Induced Colitis Through Microbiota Remodeling

open access: yesFood Bioengineering, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Bitter melon polysaccharides (BMPs), a key bioactive component of bitter melon, exhibit a range of biological activities including gut microbiota regulation, immune modulation, and antioxidant activity. Based on previous evidence of its protective effect on the colonic mucus barrier under high‐fat‐diet condition, this study evaluated the ...

Antioxidant Activity and Inhibition of Carbohydrate Hydrolyzing Enzymes by Underutilized Parts From Some Plant‐Based Foods and Their Effect on Postprandial Hyperglycemia

open access: yesFood Chemistry International, EarlyView.
The underutilized parts viz: pawpaw seed, banana, plantain, and potato peels showed promising antioxidant and inhibition of α‐amylase and α‐glucosidase activities (IC50 values ≤ 100 μg/mL). Similarly, pawpaw seed, banana, plantain, and potato peels reduced postprandial hyperglycemia in sucrose‐ and maltose‐induced hyperglycemia in rats.

Phenolic Profiles, Antioxidant Properties and Predicted Glycaemic Index of Bread Sweetened With Date Syrup in Comparison With Granulated Sugar

open access: yesFood Chemistry International, EarlyView.
Date syrup are used as sweetener in bread. Bread with date syrup had superior phenolic composition, better antioxidant properties and carbohydrate hydrolysing enzymes while bread with granulated sugar had higher predicted glyceamic index. The study concluded that date syrup could be the next though‐out ingredient for dual purpose in bread. ABSTRACT The
