Enhanced Bone Formation in Segmental Defect Healing Using 3D Printed Scaffolds Containing Bone Marrow Stromal Cells and Small Molecules Targeting Chondrogenesis and Osteogenesis

open access: yesBiomedicines
Background/Objectives: Nonunion bone healing results from a critical size defect that fails to bridge a bone injury to produce bony union. Novel approaches are critical for refining therapy in clinically challenging bone injuries, but the complex and ...

A segmental defect adaptation of the mouse closed femur fracture model for the analysis of severely impaired bone healing

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, 2020
Objective To better characterize nonunion endochondral bone healing and evaluate novel therapeutic approaches for critical size defect healing in clinically challenging bone repair, a segmental defect model of bone injury was adapted from the three‐point

Identifying the most important confounders when assessing the association between low-grade systemic inflammation and musculoskeletal pain:A modified Delphi study

open access: yes, 2021
OBJECTIVE: The association between low-grade systemic inflammation and musculoskeletal pain may be influenced by multiple factors. However, little is known about the relative importance of these factors, and few studies account for them.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

From energy provision to protein synthesis: Tunnelling nanotubes as mediators of intercellular metabolic cooperation in cancer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The cytoskeleton‐mediated transport of mitochondria via tunnelling nanotubes restores respiration, increases ATP production, rescues cells from apoptosis, activates the AKT/mTOR signalling pathway, promotes cell migration and invasiveness, contributes to cancer progression and treatment resistance.

Real‐World Longitudinal Data on the Impact of Hydroxychloroquine Blood Level Monitoring on Lupus Outcomes: Results of a Prospective Longitudinal Cohort Study

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, EarlyView.
Objective Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) is a cornerstone therapy in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), but the weight‐based dosing does not account for clinical factors that can introduce individual variability in drug metabolism and clearance. We leveraged longitudinal data from a prospective SLE cohort to identify clinical factors that predict ...

Safety of Prescription Nonsteroidal Anti‐inflammatory Drugs in Adults With Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Data From a Large Administrative Claims Cohort

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, EarlyView.
Objective The concern that nonsteroidal anti‐inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may precipitate flares of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has limited their use in managing musculoskeletal symptoms in those with IBD, but safety data are mixed. Methods This retrospective cohort study included patients with IBD aged at least 18 years from Optum's deidentified ...
