Genetic Variation in Chemical Defence Affects Protection of an Herbivorous Insect Against Predation. [PDF]
ABSTRACT Genetic variation contributes to intraspecific differences in the chemical defence in many insect species, yet the underlying genetic mechanisms remain poorly understood. The horseradish flea beetle, Phyllotreta armoraciae, sequesters glucosinolates from its horseradish host plant and activates them using endogenous myrosinase enzymes.

Glucosinolate hydrolysis products suppress entomopathogenic nematodes in vitro but do not protect sequestering flea beetle larvae in vivo. [PDF]
The flea beetle's glucosinolate‐based chemical defense fails to protect larvae from nematode infection. However, the defense inhibits the nematode's symbiotic bacteria, thereby potentially impairing nematode reproduction and biocontrol success. Abstract BACKGROUND The efficacy of entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) in the biological control of insect ...

A Combined Colon Organoid-Sensory Neuron Model Reveals Epithelial Contribution to Moringin Efficacy Against Painful Inflammatory Bowel Disease. [PDF]
Experimental workflow and main findings of the study. ABSTRACT Visceral pain is a major symptom of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs), requiring effective treatment strategies. Gut epithelium, beyond maintaining barrier integrity and microbiota homeostasis, modulates neurosensorial circuitries, influencing visceral sensitivity.

Distribution of Myrosinase in Rapeseed Tissues [PDF]
Immunocytochemical studies on Brassica napus (rapeseed) tissues using a monoclonal antibody against myrosinase (thioglucoside glucohydrolase) showed that the enzyme was only present in a small number of cells. In the developing embryo, scattered myrosinase-containing cells were present in both cotyledons and axis.

The study of Zn2+ and Cu2+ effects on myrosinase activity and sulforaphane production in Lepidium draba [PDF]
Myrosinase is a β-thioglucoside glucohydrolase enzyme which catalyzses the separation of glucose from glucosinolates and produces an unstable intermediate, aglycone.

Extended darkness induces internal turnover of glucosinolates in Arabidopsis thaliana leaves. [PDF]
Prolonged darkness leads to carbohydrate starvation, and as a consequence plants degrade proteins and lipids to oxidize amino acids and fatty acids as alternative substrates for mitochondrial ATP production.

Yellow mustards are widely cultivated for their spicy flavor and are rich source of glucosinolates and myrosinase. The predominant glucosinolate in yellow mustard seeds is sinalbin and corresponding isothiocyanate is 4-hydroxybenzyl isothiocyanate upon ...

Immunological characterization of rapeseed myrosinase [PDF]
A purified 75‐kDa myrosinase and a crude rapeseed myrosinase fraction were used as antigens to produce mouse anti‐myrosinase monoclonal antibodies. The 75‐kDa myrosinase was also used to produce a polyclonal rabbit antiserum. The antiserum and one monoclonal antibody reacted with three distinct rapeseed polypeptides of 75, 70 and 65 kDa (M75, M70 and ...

Sinigrin is present in significant amounts in cruciferous vegetables. Epidemiological studies suggest that the consumption of such vegetables decreases the risk of cancer, and the effect is attributed mainly to allyl isothiocyanate (AITC), a hydrolysis ...

Glucosinolates are secondary plant metabolites present in Brassica vegetables. The endogenous enzyme myrosinase is responsible for the hydrolysis of glucosinolates, yielding a variety of compounds, including health-promoting isothiocyanates.
