De novo Development and Characterization of Tetranucleotide Microsatellite Loci Markers from a Southeastern Population of the House Finch (Haemorhous mexicanus) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Microsatellites are short tandem repeats (e.g. TAGATAGA) of base pairs in a species’ genome. High mutation rates in these regions produce variation in the number of repeats across individuals that can be utilized to study patterns of population- and ...

Platelet Serotonin Levels Are Associated with Plasma Soluble Leptin Receptor Concentrations in Normoglycemic Women

open access: yesJournal of Diabetes Research, 2019
Most peripheral serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine (5HT)) is synthetized in the gut with platelets being its main circulating reservoir. 5HT is acting as a hormone in key organs to regulate glucose and lipid metabolism. However, the relation between platelet

Use of Metabotyping to Identify Individuals With Different Triglyceride Response Curves After Intake of High‐Fat Meals

open access: yesMolecular Nutrition &Food Research, Volume 70, Issue 9, 13 May 2026.
We applied a latent class mixed model to cluster individuals based on their postprandial triglyceride response curves after consumption of high‐fat meals. Three clusters with different triglyceride response patterns were identified. This approach holds the potential to be used for identifying metabolically dysfunctional individuals.

Insulin resistance associates with hepatic lobular inflammation in subjects with obesity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Purpose: Obese subjects with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) are more prone to develop additional metabolic disturbances such as systemic insulin resistance (IR) and type 2 diabetes.

Effect of Insulin on Rate of Hepatic Uptake of NEFA.

open access: yesExperimental Biology and Medicine, 1960
SummaryConcentrations of NEFA in plasma of blood obtained from splenic artery, portal and hepatic veins were measured in un-anesthetized dogs together with hepatic plasma flow. Rates of hepatic and non-hepatic splanchnic uptake or output of NEFA were calculated before and after insulin administration. A marked increase in rate of hepatic uptake of NEFA

Genetic Parameter Estimation for Plasma Biomarkers Associated With Energy Reserves During Critical Physiological Stages in Sheep

open access: yesJournal of Animal Breeding and Genetics, Volume 143, Issue 3, Page 443-456, May 2026.
ABSTRACT The ability of ruminants to mobilise and restore body reserves (BR) over time, referred to as BR dynamics, is currently considered an interesting biological component to be included in breeding programs targeting enhanced BR resilience. However, genetic studies of proxies for BR levels and BRD remain scarce, particularly in small ruminants ...

Milk components as potential indicators of energy status in early lactation Holstein dairy cows from two farms

open access: yesAnimal
Negative energy balance (NEB) is a serious problem in most dairy cows. It occurs most frequently after calving, when cows are unable to consume sufficient DM to meet their energy requirements during early lactation.

Insulin resistance in type 1 diabetes: what is ‘double diabetes’ and what are the risks? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
In this review, we explore the concept of ‘double diabetes’, a combination of type 1 diabetes with features of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.

Adipocyte‐specific FFA2 deletion leads to increased adipose inflammation and is associated with altered intestinal lipid handling in mice

open access: yesPhysiological Reports, Volume 14, Issue 9, May 2026.
Abstract Obesity and related metabolic disorders are often characterized by chronic adipose tissue inflammation, driving systemic insulin resistance and general metabolic dysfunction. Free Fatty Acid Receptor 2 (FFA2) has emerged as a potential modulator of adipocyte function, inflammation, and metabolism.
