Development of GABA‐immunoreactivity in the neocortex of the mouse
Journal of Comparative Neurology, 1992AbstractThe prenatal and postanatal development of GABAergic elements in the neocortex of the mouse was analyzed by GABA‐immunocytochemistry. Radial distribution of cells and laminar numerical densities were calculated at each developmental stage to substantiate qualitative observations.

Development of cairetinin immunoreactivity in the neocortex of the rat
Journal of Comparative Neurology, 1995AbstractThe prenatal and postnatal development of calretinin (CR)‐containing elements in the neocortex of the rat was analyzed using immunohistochemistry. CR immunoreactivity in the cortical anlage appeared early at embryonic day 14 (E14), with CR‐positive neurons located in the primitive plexiform layer and in the emerging subplate and marginal zones.

Gap junctions in developing neocortex: a review
Brain Research Reviews, 2004Several independent lines of evidence indicate that gap junctional coupling is widespread and functionally important in early cortical development. The extensive expression of many connexins, the clusters of coupled neuroblasts or neurons revealed by tracer injections or the functional coactivation of neurons shown by calcium imaging can be seen as ...

Development of Neuronal Activity in Neocortex of the Kitten
Nature, 1966MAMMALIAN cerebral cortex undergoes rapid structural changes during the postnatal period. Dendritic connexions increase in number and complexity, the volume of neurone somata increases, and myelination occurs in subcortical and cortical fibres1. Little is known about the functioning state of cerebral neurones during this period of rapid development. In

Neurotrophins and activity-dependent development of the neocortex
Current Opinion in Neurobiology, 1996A number of recent results suggest that neurotrophins play an important role in early development as well as in the later, activity-dependent processes important for the final shaping of cortical connections. Many neurotrophins and their receptors are regulated in parallel with the 'critical period' in development, and their application to the ...

Immunohistochemical analysis of the development of somatostatin in the reeler neocortex
Developmental Brain Research, 1988The development of somatostatin (SS) neurons and fibers has been examined in the dorsolateral cortex of the mouse mutant reeler. Immunohistochemistry was performed using antisera directed primarily against SS28 or SS28(1-12). In the normal mouse at postnatal day 5 (P5), somatostatin (SS) neurons are concentrated in the ventral half of the cortex, in ...

Fetuin in the developing neocortex of the rat: Distribution and origin
The Journal of Comparative Neurology, 2000Immunocytochemical distribution of the fetal protein fetuin in the neocortex of developing rat brain and the presence of its mRNA, as detected by using reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction analysis, was studied in fetuses at embryonic day 15 (E15) through E22, in neonates at postnatal day 0 (P0) through P20, and in adults.

GABAergic Transcallosal Neurons in Developing Rat Neocortex
European Journal of Neuroscience, 1997AbstractIn the mature cerebral cortex the interhemispheric connections across the corpus callosum appear to be essentially completely excitatory on the basis of both immunocytochemical and electrophysiological studies. During late embryonic development, however, immunocytochemical staining reveals numerous GABA‐positive fibres in the callosum, which ...

The development of long-term potentiation in hippocampus and neocortex
Neuropsychologia, 1989The development of long-term potentiation (LTP), an enduring alteration in synaptic efficacy following afferent activation, was examined in CA1 hippocampus and primary visual cortex of rat. Both regions show little LTP prior to postnatal day 5, demonstrate a maximal potentiated response around postnatal day 15, and a subsequent decline to adult levels.

Tachykinin Expression and Localization in Developing Feline Neocortex
Developmental Neuroscience, 2003Developmental patterns of expression and localization of tachykinins in feline neocortex were determined by qualitative immunohistochemical means. Three observations were obtained. (1) By midgestation, tachykinins were progressively accumulated in an infrequent (<1%) population of interneurons (sparse dendritic spines) settled mainly in superficial ...
