Assessment of Metal Contamination and Human Health Risk in the Buffalo River Estuary, Eastern Cape, South Africa

open access: yesEnvironmental Toxicology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Metal contamination in estuarine environments poses environmental and public health concerns, particularly where surface waters support domestic and subsistence uses. This study assessed the seasonal distribution, controlling mechanisms, and non‐carcinogenic health risks of selected metals (Mg, Al, Ba, Fe, Mn, and Zn) in the Buffalo River ...

immunoHuMiX: A personalizable gut‐on‐chip model for unraveling human microbiome–immune interactions

open access: yesVIEW, EarlyView.
The study introduces a personalized gut model that brings together human immune cells and intestinal cells to better mimic how the body interacts with microbes. This system successfully maintained both human cells and a 17‐strain probiotic community, showing consistent immune responses across different donors.

Gut microbiota dysbiosis and Long COVID susceptibility in chronic kidney disease

open access: yesVIEW, EarlyView.
This study investigated gut microbiota dysbiosis and its association with Long COVID susceptibility in 224 hemodialysis patients. We found that 35.3% of patients developed Long COVID, characterized by neurological symptoms and elevated inflammatory markers, accompanied by significant gut microbiota alterations including enriched proinflammatory taxa ...

Characterization of the Middle Ear Microbiome in Meniere's Disease by 16S rRNA Gene Sequencing Compared to Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media

open access: yesWorld Journal of Otorhinolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective To investigate the middle ear microbiome in Meniere's disease (MD) patients. Methods Middle ear smears from 10 MD patients (ME group) and 10 chronic suppurative otitis patients (OE group) were collected during surgery and processed via 16S rRNA gene sequencing.

Tree cover and geographic origin of tree species drive bird functional groups in urban environments

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Urban trees provide habitat and resources for wild species in cities and support biodiversity provision of ecosystem services, among which insect control is particularly relevant. Predators of insects are promoted by the presence of trees and, in turn, may enhance biosecurity of the trees.

A spectrum of nonsense-mediated mRNA decay efficiency along the degree of mutational constraint

open access: yesCommunications Biology
Despite its importance for regulating gene expression, nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD) remains poorly understood. Here, we extend the findings of a previous landmark study that proposed several factors associated with NMD efficiency using matched ...

Urban bats show dietary flexibility in aquatic arthropod consumption at urban and rural waterbodies

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Urban waterbodies are critical for biodiversity and provide feeding grounds for insectivorous bats. Yet, how urbanisation affects bats' food choices at urban waterbodies and the role of emergent aquatic arthropods remain poorly understood. We compared the diet of three urban bat species – Vespadelus vulturnus, Chalinolobus gouldii, and Myotis macropus –

Concrete jungle to urban oasis: evaluating scale, vegetation cover, and aggregation of urban greenspaces on wildlife

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Urban greenspaces are a haven for wildlife in densely populated cities. Wildlife use greenspaces for resource acquisition, shelter, and travel across urbanized landscapes. Greenspace metrics such as herbaceous or woody landcover, size, patchiness, and human land use influence species richness.

Importance of woody patches and vegetation heterogeneity in Texas tortoise microhabitat use

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Microhabitat sites provide important resources and thermal conditions to reptile species that can vary spatially and temporally. This study assessed Texas tortoise Gopherus berlandieri microhabitat use and its relationship with carapace temperature during their active (April–October) and inactive seasons (November–March) between January 2023 and ...

Habitat selection of moose in Sweden in managed boreal forests with Pinus contorta and P. sylvestris

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Human land use can take advantage of using exotic species to increase financial benefits. However, the use of exotic tree species might affect ecosystem functioning, potentially including the habitat use and movement behaviour of animals, modifying their ecological impact, and interactions with human land use.
