Under normoxic conditions, the SUMOylated fraction of TFAP2A cannot interact with the Ku70/Ku80 complex, nor it can bind to chromatin. The unSUMOylated fraction pre‐occupies the chromatin of a subset of hypoxia‐induced genes together with the Ku70/Ku80 complex for basal euchromatin formation. Under hypoxic conditions, the SUMOylation equilibrium shifts

Transcription‐coupled repair: tangled up in convoluted repair
In this review, we discuss recent findings derived from diverse genomic, biochemical and structural, imaging, and functional studies (B–E) that culminated in deep mechanistic insight (A) into the vital cellular process of transcription‐coupled nucleotide excision repair (TC‐NER).

Neocortical neurogenesis: a proneural gene perspective
The neocortex is a mammalian‐specific brain region responsible for higher‐order cognitive functioning that shares fundamental similarities across species, but which is larger and more complex in humans. Proneural genes, encoding basic helix–loop–helix transcription factors (TFs), are evolutionarily conserved drivers of neurogenesis from fly to human ...

Chromatin folding by the Polycomb group proteins and its elusive role in epigenetic repression
Genes repressed by the Polycomb system display greater chromatin folding compared to ‘regular’ inactive genes. The associated chromatin compaction, driven by PRC1‐H3K27me3 interactions, is modest and dynamic. This questions traditional models where Polycomb proteins repress transcription by sheltering genes from transcriptional activators.
