Oxidative Stress and Lipid Peroxidation in Prolonged Users of Methamphetamine
Drug Metabolism Letters, 2014Methamphetamine abuse results in numerous adverse health effects. Formation of free radicals may be a contributing factor. Methamphetamine has produced free radicals in animal studies. Present study was conducted to evaluate status of oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation among chronic methamphetamine users.Ninety six individuals were selected ...

[Nitric oxide and lipid peroxidation].
Comptes rendus des seances de la Societe de biologie et de ses filiales, 1996Nitric oxide (NO) is a free radical produced enzymatically in biological systems from the guanidino group of L-arginine. Its large spectrum of biological effects is achieved through chemical interactions with different targets including oxygen (O2), superoxide (O2o-) and other oxygen reactive species (ROS), transition metals and thiols.

Oxidant-antioxidant enzymes and lipid peroxidation in generalized vitiligo
Clinical and Experimental Dermatology, 2004Vitiligo is a common pigmentary disorder of the skin with selective destruction of melanocytes. The pathogenetic mechanisms in vitiligo have not been completely clarified. The aim of our investigation was to evaluate the oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of generalized vitiligo. Twenty-seven patients with generalized vitiligo and 24 phototype-, age-,

Studies on lipid peroxidation and protein oxidation in the aging brain
Neurobiology of Aging, 1995Lipid peroxidation (LP) and protein oxidation (PO) were investigated in hippocampus and frontal cortex homogenates from young (5 months), mature (13 months) and old (24 months) Wistar rats and young (5 months) and old (24 months) Brown Norway rats. LP and PO were determined in basal conditions and after incubation without iron (spontaneous condition ...

Iodothyronines: Oxidative deiodination by hemoglobin and inhibition of lipid peroxidation
Lipids, 1984AbstractPurified rat hemoglobin catalyzes the oxidative degradation of iodothyronines to form iodide and an iodine‐containing intermediate that reacts with protein. Hemoglobin also catalyzes peroxidation of linoleic acid. These observations are consistent with the reported intrinsic peroxidase activity of hemoglobin and other heme‐proteins.

Oxidation of lipids and membranes I: In vitro formation of peroxidative lipid polymers
Journal of Supramolecular Structure, 1975AbstractFluorescent polymers were obtained by oxidizing partly emulsified linolenic acid with different oxidants. The speed of formation of polymers differed for the various oxidants, and the difference was not a simple function of the oxidation potential.

Levels of oxidative damage and lipid peroxidation in thyroid neoplasia
Head & Neck, 2009AbstractBackgroundThis study assessed the presence of oxidative damage and lipid peroxidation in thyroid neoplasia.MethodsUsing tissue microarrays and immunohistochemistry, we assessed levels of DNA damage (8‐oxo‐dG) and lipid peroxidation (4‐HNE) in 71 follicular thyroid adenoma (FTA), 45 papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), and 17 follicular thyroid ...

The Role of Placental Oxidative Stress and Lipid Peroxidation in Preeclampsia
Obstetrical & Gynecological Survey, 2005Preeclampsia is a complex multisystem disorder exclusively seen in human species that is characterized by hypertension and proteinuria. This disorder has the highest maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality of all pregnancy-related complications.

Oxidation of ferrous iron during peroxidation of lipid substrates
Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Lipids and Lipid Metabolism, 1987Oxidation of Fe2+ in solution was dependent upon medium composition and the presence of lipid. The complete oxidation of Fe2+ in 0.9% saline was markedly accelerated in the presence of phosphate or EDTA and the ferrous oxidation product formed was readily recoverable as Fe2+ by ascorbate reduction.

The role of lipid peroxidation and antioxidants in oxidative modification of LDL
Free Radical Biology and Medicine, 1992The purpose of this study is to provide a comprehensive survey on the compositional properties of LDL (e.g., lipid classes, fatty acids, antioxidants) relevant for its susceptibility to oxidation, on the mechanism and kinetics of LDL oxidation, and on the chemical and physico-chemical properties of LDL oxidized by exposure to copper ions.
