Antimicrobial peptides: agents of border protection for companion animals. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Over the past 20 years, there have been significant inroads into understanding the roles of antimicrobial peptides in homeostatic functions and their involvement in disease pathogenesis.

Preliminary study on MC1R polymorphism in some cattle breeds raised in Italy

open access: yesItalian Journal of Animal Science, 2011
Most of the Western European cattle breeds consist of standardised breeds with a definite coat colour (Renieri et al., 1984). Thus coat colour could be useful to detect genetic markers for cattle breed identification.

Genetics of Base Coat Colour Variations and Coat Colour-Patterns of the South African Nguni Cattle Investigated Using High-Density SNP Genotypes

open access: yesFrontiers in Genetics, 2022
Nguni cattle are a Sanga type breed with mixed B. taurus and B. indicus ancestry and proven resistance to ticks, diseases and other harsh conditions of the African geographical landscape.

Technical Note: The Use of RNA-interference as a Tool to Find Proteins Involved in Melanosome Formation or Transport [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Melanosomes are lysosome-related organelles that produce and transport the pigment melanin within melanocytes. Mutations in proteins required for melanosome transport and formation lead to a range of pigmentation defects, manifested at the cellular level

Nonlinear Microscopy of Eumelanin and Pheomelanin with Subcellular Resolution [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Investigative Dermatology, 2013
Pump-probe microscopy nondestructively differentiates eumelanin and pheomelanin and can be used to quantify melanin distributions in thin biopsy slices. Here we have extended that work for imaging eumelanin and pheomelanin distributions on a subcellular scale, allowing elucidation of characteristics of different cell types.

Pheomelanin-based colouration is correlated with indices of flying strategies in the barn owl [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Resource polymorphism refers to individuals from the same population foraging in alternative habitats or on alternative food. Food specialization can be associated with adaptations such as colour polymorphism, with pale and dark colours conferring ...

Label-Free Delineation of Human Uveal Melanoma Infiltration With Pump–Probe Microscopy

open access: yesFrontiers in Oncology, 2022
Uveal melanoma (UM) is the most frequent primary intraocular malignancy in adults, characterized by melanin depositions in melanocytes located in the uveal tract in the eyes.

Sexual dimorphism in melanin pigmentation, feather coloration and its heritability in the barn swallow (Hirundo rustica). [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
Melanin is the main pigment in animal coloration and considerable variation in the concentrations of the two melanin forms (pheo- and eumlanin) in pigmented tissues exists among populations and individuals.

Photodegradation of Eumelanin and Pheomelanin and Its Pathophysiological Implications [PDF]

open access: yesPhotochemistry and Photobiology, 2017
AbstractEumelanin is photoprotective for pigmented tissues while pheomelanin is phototoxic. In this review, we summarize current understanding of how eumelanin and pheomelanin structures are modified by ultraviolet A (UVA) and also by visible light and how reactive oxygen species participate in those processes.
