ABSTRACT Objectives Cryogen spray cooling (CSC) is critical for protecting the epidermis during laser dermatologic procedures. The widely used cryogen, R134a, has a high global warming potential (GWP), motivating interest in environmentally favorable alternatives such as HFO‐1234ze.

Sleep and vigilance linked to melanism in wild barn owls. [PDF]
Understanding the function of variation in sleep requires studies in the natural ecological conditions in which sleep evolved. Sleep has an impact on individual performance and hence may integrate the costs and benefits of investing in processes that are

The detrimental effects of conventional farming on bird biodiversity are increasingly documented. Despite this, the specific impacts of both organic and conventional farming practices on bird coloration and sperm quality in natural settings remain unexplored. This study aimed to determine whether these farming practices differentially affect body mass,

Quantitative variation of melanins in alpaca (Lama pacos L.)
The amount of melanin pigments was investigated in 95 Peruvian alpaca, representative of six different fleece colours, by means of spectrophotometric assays: SpEM (Spectrophotometric Eumelanin), SpPM (Spectrophotometric Pheomelanin), SpASM ...

This study investigated the functionality, color, pasting and rheological properties of sorghum–pearl millet composite flour fortified with oyster mushroom. Fortification increased water, oil and swelling capacities, while decreasing pasting viscosities. The color lightness and yellowness improved with increasing oyster mushroom levels.

Effect of the MC1R gene on sexual dimorphism in melanin-based colorations. [PDF]
Variants of the melanocortin-1 receptor (MC1R) gene result in abrupt, naturally selected colour morphs. These genetic variants may differentially affect sexual dimorphism if one morph is naturally selected in the two sexes but another morph is naturally ...

Skin Colour in Salamanders Is Modulated by Both Epitranscriptomic Methylation and Gene Expression
ABSTRACT Animal colouration is a key trait in organismal biology, being involved in natural and sexual selection, competition, and communication. Amphibians use their highly diverse colouration in many ecological interactions, but the molecular bases of their colour variation are less well understood than in other vertebrate systems. While the genetic,
