Anti-phospholipid-antibodies in patients with relapsing polychondritis [PDF]
Relapsing polychondritis (RP) is an extremly rare multisystemic disease thought to be of autoimmune origin. In order to assess if RP is associated with anti-phospholipid antibodies (aPL), clinical data and sera of 21 patients with RP were collected in a ...

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Stimulation of Erythrocyte Cell Membrane Scrambling by Mushroom Tyrosinase
Background: Mushroom tyrosinase, a copper containing enzyme, modifies growth and survival of tumor cells. Mushroom tyrosinase may foster apoptosis, an effect in part due to interference with mitochondrial function.

BACKGROUND: Blood transfusion remains a key treatment for managing occlusive episodes and painful crises in sickle-cell disease (SCD). In that clinical context, red blood cells (RBCs) from donors and transfused to patients, may be affected by plasma ...

Phosphatidylserine polarization is required for proper Cdc42 localization and for development of cell polarity. [PDF]
We used genetically-encoded fluorescent probes to visualize the distribution of phosphatidylserine (PS) in live S. cerevisiae. The majority of the PS was found to reside in the cytosolic leaflet of the plasma membrane.

Transport of Phosphatidylserine from the Endoplasmic Reticulum to the Site of Phosphatidylserine Decarboxylase2 in Yeast [PDF]
Over the past two decades, most of the genes specifying lipid synthesis and metabolism in yeast have been identified and characterized. Several of these biosynthetic genes and their encoded enzymes have provided valuable tools for the genetic and biochemical dissection of interorganelle lipid transport processes in yeast.

Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

Research Progress on Preparation Method, Structure and Application of Phosphatidylserine Liposomes
Phosphatidylserine is an important cell membrane component, especially in animal brain nerve cells. It has many biological activities such as improving nerve cell function, regulating nerve impulse conduction and enhancing memory.

Bid participates in genotoxic drug-induced apoptosis of HeLa cells and is essential for death receptor ligands' apoptotic and synergistic effects [PDF]
Background: The BH3-only protein Bid is an important component of death receptor-mediated caspase activation. Bid is cleaved by caspase-8 or -10 into t-Bid, which translocates to mitochondria and triggers the release of caspase-activating factors.

Characterization of Phosphatidylserine Transport to the Locus of Phosphatidylserine Decarboxylase 2 in Permeabilized Yeast [PDF]
In yeast, nascent phosphatidylserine (PtdSer) can be transported to the mitochondria and Golgi/vacuole for decarboxylation to synthesize phosphatidylethanolamine (PtdEtn). In strains with a psd1Delta allele for the mitochondrial PtdSer decarboxylase, the conversion of nascent PtdSer to PtdEtn can serve as an indicator of lipid transport to the locus of
