Characterization of virulence-associated determinants in the envelope glycoprotein of Pichinde virus [PDF]

open access: yesVirology, 2012
We use a small animal model, based on guinea pigs infected with a non-pathogenic Pichinde virus (PICV), to understand the virulence mechanisms of arenavirus infections in the hosts. PICV P2 strain causes a mild febrile reaction in guinea pigs, while P18 causes severe disease with clinical and pathological features reminiscent of Lassa hemorrhagic fever

Recombinant Tri-Segmented Pichinde Virus as a Novel Live Viral Vaccine Platform [PDF]

open access: yesMethods in Molecular Biology, 2017
Pichinde virus (PICV) is a nonpathogenic arenavirus with a bi-segmented RNA genome (L and S segments) that encodes four viral genes. We have developed a reverse genetics system to generate recombinant tri-segmented PICV (rP18tri) that packages three RNA segments (L, S1, and S2) and can encode up to two foreign genes.

Preclinical evaluation of two phylogenetically distant arenavirus vectors for the development of novel immunotherapeutic combination strategies for cancer treatment [PDF]

open access: yesJournal for ImmunoTherapy of Cancer
Background Engineered arenavirus vectors have recently been developed to leverage the body’s immune system in the fight against chronic viral infections and cancer. Vectors based on Pichinde virus (artPICV) and lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (artLCMV)

Proteomic analysis of Pichindé virus infection identifies differential expression of prothymosin-alpha. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Biomed Biotechnol, 2010
The arenaviruses include a number of important pathogens including Lassa virus and Junin virus. Presently, the only treatment is supportive care and the antiviral Ribavirin. In the event of an epidemic, patient triage may be required to more effectively manage resources; the development of prognostic biomarker signatures, correlating with disease ...

Immunogenicity and Protective Efficacy of a Recombinant Pichinde Viral-Vectored Vaccine Expressing Influenza Virus Hemagglutinin Antigen in Pigs

open access: yesVaccines, 2022
Influenza A virus of swine (IAV-S) is an economically important swine pathogen. The IAV-S hemagglutinin (HA) surface protein is the main target for vaccine development.

Polymerase Activity of Pichinde Virus [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Virology, 1974
Pichinde virus, a member of the arenavirus group, was examined for polymerase activity. Purified virus was found to contain RNA-dependent RNA polymerase but not RNA-dependent DNA polymerase activity. Since RNase but neither DNase nor actinomycin D inhibited the endogenous polymerase reaction, RNA of the virus appeared to be used as the ...

Loss of anti-viral immunity by infection with a virus encoding a cross-reactive pathogenic epitope. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS Pathogens, 2012
T cell cross-reactivity between different strains of the same virus, between different members of the same virus group, and even between unrelated viruses is a common occurrence.

Observation of arenavirus nucleoprotein heptamer assembly

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, Volume 11, Issue 4, Page 1076-1083, April 2021., 2021
The nucleoprotein associates with RNA to form a ribonucleoprotein complex. The nucleoprotein trends to self‐assemble into heptameric rings. Theses rings represent stable intermediate states representative of the average full turn of the Arenaviridae ribonucleoprotein filament.
