Reduced SH3RF3 May Protect Against Alzheimer's Disease by Lowering Microglial Pro‐Inflammatory Responses via Modulation of JNK and NFkB Signaling

open access: yesGlia, Volume 74, Issue 7, July 2026.
SNPs in SH3RF3 decrease the age of onset of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Reduced SH3RF3 blunts human microglial JNK and NFkB signaling and downstream inflammatory cytokine production, which may partially explain how SH3RF3 SNPs protect against AD. ABSTRACT Understanding how high‐risk individuals are protected from Alzheimer's disease (AD) may illuminate ...

Picornavirus-Induced Airway Mucosa Immune Profile in Asymptomatic Neonates [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Bacterial airway colonization is known to alter the airway mucosa immune response in neonates whereas the impact of viruses is unknown. The objective was therefore to examine the effect of respiratory viruses on the immune signature in the airways of ...

Systematic nomenclature of picornavirus proteins [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Virology, 1984
An easily learned convention for systematizing the nomenclature of picornavirus proteins is described. The convention is based upon an idealized map, called the L434 diagram, of the picornavirus polyprotein.

Identification of a Novel Feline Picornavirus from the Domestic Cat

open access: yes, 2012
While picornaviruses are known to infect different animals, their existence in the domestic cat was unknown. We describe the discovery of a novel feline picornavirus (FePV) from stray cats in Hong Kong.

Diversity Patterns of Domestic Herbivore Viruses in China Reveal Transmission Dynamics with Disease Management Implications

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 13, Issue 32, 9 June 2026.
This study performs pan‐viromic profiling of 14,529 samples from 5,710 domestic herbivores across five Chinese provinces, establishing the DhCN‐Virome (1,085,360 viral metagenomes). It reveals species/sample‐specific viromic signatures and cross‐species transmission dynamics, aiding unified disease control.

A New Picornavirus Isolated from Bank Voles (Clethrionomys glareolus)

open access: yes, 1999
A previously unknown picornavirus was isolated from bank voles (Clethrionomys glareolus). Electron microscopy images and sequence data of the prototype isolate, named Ljungan virus, showed that it is a picornavirus.

Progress in human picornavirus research : New findings from the AIROPico consortium [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Several research groups in Europe are active on different aspects of human picornavirus research. The AIROPico (Academia-Industry R&D Opportunities for Picornaviruses) consortium combined the disciplines of pathogenesis, diagnostics and therapy ...

Extracellular Vesicles Released by Picornavirus‐Infected Cells Modify Antiviral Immune Cell Responses

open access: yesJournal of Extracellular Vesicles, Volume 15, Issue 6, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Naked viruses of the family Picornaviridae commonly spread via lysis of infected cells. Recent studies indicate that, prior to cell lysis, naked viruses are packaged and released inside extracellular vesicles (EVs). This has been considered a pro‐viral mechanism because EV membranes protect enclosed virions from neutralizing antibodies.

Foot-and-Mouth Disease Virus Serotype SAT 3 in Long-Horned Ankole Calf, Uganda

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2015
After a 16-year interval, foot-and-mouth disease virus serotype SAT 3 was isolated in 2013 from an apparently healthy long-horned Ankole calf that grazed close to buffalo in Uganda.
