Functions and biosynthesis of plasmalogens in health and disease
Plasmalogens (1-O-alk-1'-enyl-2-acyl glycerophospholipids) constitute a special class of phospholipids characterized by the presence of a vinyl-ether bond at the sn-1 position.

Energetic dysregulations in psychotic disorders: Targets for new therapeutics
The present review synthesizes literature documenting aberrant energy production and use, specifically related to mitochondrial and redox dysregulation, in psychotic disorders. Findings from different levels of investigation—genetic, cellular, and in vivo imaging—converge on aberrant energy metabolism as a hallmark of psychotic disorders.

The Role of Oxidative Stress in Periodontitis
Oxidative stress is involved in multiple chemical reactions that take place in different intracellular organelles: mitochondria, rough endoplasmic reticulum, peroxisomes, autophagy, and aging, and can be influenced by exogenous factors: nutrition, physical activity, psychological status, environmental conditions, microbiome, and drugs.

Human and great ape red blood cells differ in plasmalogen levels and composition
Background Plasmalogens are ether phospholipids required for normal mammalian developmental, physiological, and cognitive functions. They have been proposed to act as membrane antioxidants and reservoirs of polyunsaturated fatty acids as well as ...

Endothelial ether lipids link the vasculature to blood pressure, behavior, and neurodegeneration
Vascular disease contributes to neurodegeneration, which is associated with decreased blood pressure in older humans. Plasmalogens, ether phospholipids produced by peroxisomes, are decreased in Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and other ...

Plasmalogens participate in very-long-chain fatty acid-induced pathology
Peroxisomes are organelles responsible for multiple metabolic pathways including, the biosynthesis of plasmalogens, a class of phospholipids, and the beta-oxidation of very-long-chain fatty acids (VLCFA).

Determination of Plasmalogen Molecular Species in Hen Eggs
(1) Background: Plasmalogens are vinyl ether-type glycerophospholipids that are characteristically distributed in neural tissues and are significantly reduced in the brains of individuals with dementia compared to those in healthy subjects, suggesting a ...

Plasmalogen biosynthesis in peroxisomal disorders: fatty alcohol versus alkylglycerol precursors.
In recent years a growing number of inherited diseases have been recognized to originate from an impairment in one or more peroxisomal functions. Since it is well established that the first two steps in the biosynthesis of plasmalogens proceed in ...

ENT1 inhibition links oligodendrocyte lipid metabolism to connectivity in tauopathy
Abstract INTRODUCTION Metabolic dysfunction, altered adenosine signaling, and white matter abnormalities are implicated in tauopathies, but their relationship to network disconnection remains unclear. Myelinating oligodendrocytes may represent a metabolically vulnerable hub linking these processes to circuit dysfunction.
