Myocardial Lipid Metabolism Imbalance: The Pathological Core and Novel Diagnostic‐Therapeutic Directions of Cardiovascular Diseases

open access: yesJournal of Biochemical and Molecular Toxicology, Volume 40, Issue 8, August 2026.
In cardiac cells, Plin5/AMPK regulate lipid homeostasis; excess CD36‐mediated uptake drives lipotoxicity, mitochondrial dysfunction, and CVDs (e.g., heart failure). Biomarkers (ApoB/ApoA‐1) and therapies (SGLT2 inhibitors) target this cascade. ABSTRACT Cardiac lipid metabolism is fundamental to myocardial energy homeostasis, with fatty acid oxidation ...

Protective role of endogenous plasmalogens against hepatic steatosis and steatohepatitis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Free cholesterol (FC) accumulation in the liver is an important pathogenic mechanism of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH). Plasmalogens, key structural components of the cell membrane, act as endogenous antioxidants and are primarilysynthesized in the ...

Quantitative analysis of phosphatidylcholine molecular species using HPLC and light scattering detection

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 1998
A number of HPLC chromatographic procedures can be used to separate intact molecular species of phosphatidylcholine (PC), but on-line quantification has remained problematic due to insensitivity of UV-detection for saturated species.

Effect of Epigallocatechin Gallate Supplementation on Inflammation, Iron Status, and Metabolomic Profiles in Women With Obesity: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial

open access: yesMolecular Nutrition &Food Research, Volume 70, Issue 16, 27 August 2026.
In this 8‐week double‐blind pilot RCT, 400 mg/day EGCG in women with obesity produced favorable trends in cholesterol and stable iron status without significant changes in inflammation or glucose. Exploratory metabolomics suggested modulation of lipid and mitochondrial pathways, supporting safety and warranting larger trials.

Plasmalogens, astrocytes, and retinal vascular development

open access: yes, 2014
National audienceSufficient oxygen and nutrient supplies to the retina are dependent on a correct development of blood vessels. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) were shown to modulate factors involved in tissue vascularization. A congenital deficiency

Identification of plasmalogens in the cytoplasmic membrane of \u3ci\u3eBifidobacterium animalis\u3c/i\u3e subsp. \u3ci\u3eLactis\u3c/i\u3e [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Plasmalogens are ether-linked lipids that may influence oxidative stress resistance of eukaryotic cell membranes. Since bacterial membrane composition can influence environmental stress resistance, we explored the prevalence of plasmalogens in the ...

Beyond Genes: Metabolomic Evidence Indicates Potential Species‐Level Differentiation in European Wild Rabbits

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Zoology Part A: Ecological and Integrative Physiology, Volume 345, Issue 6, Page 645-656, July 2026.
ABSTRACT The European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) plays a key ecological role in Mediterranean ecosystems, yet its populations are declining. Two subspecies, O. c. algirus and O. c. cuniculus, are present in the Iberian Peninsula and exhibit genetic, phenotypic, and ecological differences.

The appearance, disappearance and reappearance of plasmalogens in evolution

open access: yes, 2010
Plasmalogens, 1-O-alk-1'-enyl 2-acyl glycerol phospholipids and glycolipids, seem to have evolved first in anaerobic bacteria, but they did not persist when facultative and aerobic species appeared after the concentration of oxygen increased in the early

Human Milk Bioactive Compounds and Psychomotor Outcomes in Infants and Children: A Systematic Review

open access: yesMolecular Nutrition &Food Research, Volume 70, Issue 14, 29 July 2026.
In our review, we assess the role of HM fatty acids, oligosaccharides, proteins, and carotenoids, on psychomotor development in children up to 18 years. Findings suggest that HM BCs, particularly n‐3 PUFAs and fucosylated HMOs, might contribute to a favorable psychomotor development in infancy, preschool age, and school age.

Plasmalogens and oxidative stress: evidence against a mojor role of plasmalogens in protection against the superoxide anion radical [PDF]

open access: yes, 1997
Although ether-linked phospholipids have been known to be constituents of biological membranes for a long time, their physiological function has remained an enigma through the years.
